Adding rational numbers Essential question: How can you add rational numbers? Unit 1-2.
 Two Rules: 1. To add numbers with the same sign, ADD the absolute values and the answer has the same sign as the original numbers.  EXAMPLE:

 Real Numbers- any numbers that are real.  Rational Numbers- is a number where two numbers that can be written as a fraction.  Integers-can be written.
Example 2 Adding Integers Find the sum – CHECK You can use a number line to check your answer –= 8 – Use sign of number with greater absolute.
Subtracting Integers Algebraically. How to Subtract Integers Algebraically 1.Rewrite the problem  Keep the first number the same  Change the problem.
Integers Lesson 1a: Integers Integers are whole numbers and their opposites. Negative integers are numbers less than zero. Positive integers are numbers.
1.2 ADDING AND SUBTRACTING INTEGERS I can find the sums and differences of integers by using a number line or using SSA/DSS.
Warm Up 8/13. Lesson 4: Efficiently Adding Integers and Other Rational Numbers Objectives I can interpret sums of rational numbers by describing real-world.
Adding Integers When adding integers use SADS. If the signs are the same, add the numbers and take the sign of the largest absolute value. If the signs.
Adding Integers SWBAT model addition of integers; add integers with like and unlike signs; add more than 2 integers.
It says "ADD" but sometimes I really subtract.

Adding and Subtracting Rational Numbers 2-2 Objective: Students will add and subtract integers and rational numbers. S. Calahan 2008

Addition of Rational Numbers Same sign – add their absolute values. The sign for the answer will be the same as the addends. Example: (-7) = - 18

Addition of Rational Numbers Different signs – subtract the lesser absolute value from the greater absolute value. The sum has the value of the greater absolute value. Example: 8 + (-9) = -1

Add (-5) = (-4) = = 8

Additive Inverse Property The sum of a number and its additive inverse is 0. Example: 2 + (-2) = 0

Subtraction of Rational Numbers Add its additive inverse: Take the sign of the largest number. Example: 8 – 15 = 8 + (-15) = -7

Subtraction – 8 = (-8) = – (-23) = = – 9 – 6 = -9 + (-6) = -15
