What makes “Flying Things” fly? Miss Laverty 2012

March 19 th, 2012 Instructions 1)Hand out the work books 2)Grab today’s handout Today’s Agenda Brainstorm flying things Define flight and propulsion Describe flying things Watch a YouTube clip Paper airplane final distance challenge

Brainstorm Work in your table groups Brainstorm as many “things that can fly” as you can Write it down as a mind map Prize for the group with the most

Flight Flight: is controlled movement through the air What does “controlled” mean?

Propulsion Propulsion: movement caused by force Examples: – Jet engine, propellers, flapping wings…

“Flying Things” Chart Chose your 4 favourite flying things Write the name Draw a diagram Decide if it is from nature or if it is man-made and explain the means of propulsion

Jet engine movie Watch the movie clip Try to fill in the blanks for the statements on your sheet

Jet engine movie We can’t use something like coal to fuel air planes because it is too heavy The jet engine sucks in air in from the front and then shoots it out the back Air expands when it is heated Turbines compress the air The expanding air doesn’t escape back out the front of the engine because it is much easier for it to go out the back The temperature can reach up to 1700 degrees Celsius

Paper Airplane Distance Challenge Create your own paper airplane You have limited time We will test the airplanes in the hallway You only have one chance to launch your plane Fill in the sections on your sheet after the challenge
