Questions?

Parallel and Perpendicular Lines Objective : To learn how to… 1) determine whether two lines are parallel or perpendicular, 2) write the equation for a line parallel or perpendicular to a given line and a given point. parallel lines – are lines in the same plane that do not intersect. perpendicular lines – are lines in the same plane that intersect to form right angles.

Parallel Lines  Two nonvertical lines are parallel if they have the same slope and different y-intercepts.  Any two vertical lines are parallel.

Example 1 Write an equation of a line that contains the given point and is parallel to the given line. (4, 1) y = 3x – 2

Example 2 Write an equation of a line that contains the given point and is parallel to the given line.

Example 3 Write an equation of a line that contains the given point and is parallel to the given line. (6, -2) 3x + 2y = 8

Perpendicular Lines  Two lines are perpendicular if the product of their slopes is -1. The slopes are opposite & reciprocal of each other.  A vertical and a horizontal line are perpendicular.

Example 4 Write an equation of a line that contains the given point and is perpendicular to the given line.

Example 5 Write an equation of a line that contains the given point and is perpendicular to the given line.

Example 6 Write an equation of a line that contains the given point and is perpendicular to the given line. (9, -3) y = 3x + 8
