Identity (James Mangold, 2003) The sound of the voice over gives the spectator enigmas straight into the opening of the films title sequence. Also the cold wintery diegetic sound atmosphere gives the film a thrilling mood. In the mis-en-scene the finger prints proves to shows the moment of realisation and what the film is about, the fingerprints shows peoples identity and the victims who are being tracked. The shot also shows pictures stuck on the wall making the owner of the house mysterious. The title identity is positioned in a open dark space, each letters from the word identity are disappearing as if people’s identities are also disappearing. Other title names are positioned in the middle making the names important rather than people’s identity. The cinematography uses different types of shots to make it a thrilling atmosphere. The editing is done really quickly to keep the spectator aware. We are looking at the files from the protagonist perspective shown through POV camera shots and over the shoulder POV shots. The camera shots use pans to see a lot of details like from the protagonist perception. The lighting is concentrating on the important files and the protagonist. This separates the importance objects and characters in the frame. The antagonist is portrayed as intelligent by the voice over, as he created a poem. The antagonist was a patient before he murdered a lot of people. Also he is an unknown natural force as we don’t see him in the opening title sequence.

Pulp Fiction (Quentin Tarintino, 1994) The restaurant non diegetic conversation tells us about the two characters that they are the antagonist. The following sound track gives a film a western feeling with the diegetic sounds of the guns and the trumpets track in the opening sequence. Quentin Tarintino is known for playing around with the sound track, compared to identity the sound in Pulp fiction the sound track does not have a thrilling atmosphere. This also adds to other sub- genres such as creating drama in the opening title sequence. Also the gun sound effects proves to show it is a crime film. The restaurant scene in the opening title sequence a wide range of camera angle and shots such as the still long shot. The venetian blinds are used in a classic way to set the scene with the antagonist in between prison bars. the The use of reverse shots not breaking the 180 degree rule as they have the conversation. The mis-en-scene use of different colours such as red and low key lighting. The low key lighting covering the couple faces in the restaurant shows the character has a hidden side. Tarintino does the opposite to classic mainstream way is shown as the scene is long before the opening title sequence. A so the pictures and many objects moving around to show the important iconography in the film. The title sequence name ‘’Pulp Fiction’’ is written is a bold Calibri body font and includes a brief case iconography making the font this connotes to the important iconography in the film. The animation of the gun shooting with names coming out at the end shows a climax side in the film. The characters are also visually presented in the opening title sequence showing the starts of the film and the important staring characters. The cinematography of the pictures shows the use of mid shots to show the characters figure expressions as well as their facial expressions about how they feel about what they are talking about.. Quentin Tarintio shows the iconography within the opening title sequence and how other characters may die in the film. The iconography is such as the brief case, sword a and guns making them important iconography in the film.

Psycho (Alfred Hitchcock, 1960) The sound track used in the opening title sequence of Psycho is a high pitched string piece which creates tension and very well this is also done through out the film. The pace of the music is quick also making the audience feel tense and feel like they are moving at the same pace as the music. Throughout the opening title sequence of Psycho it is all Non- Digetic. Towards the end of the opening the track uses and "call and response" style of notes, using the same notes but in a different pitch, this creates a mysterious atmosphere, relating the music back to the direct story line of the film. The use sound with high pitch of the instruments has an effective and makes the audience which makes them feel tense and alert them into the genre of the film. The track finishes on one long suspended note, creating suspense as it fades into the opening of the film. This example shows the use of the grey lines to bring the words into focus, this technique is used throughout the opening sequence, it is very effective to the audience and goes in time with the music also. The colouring in the opening title sequence is all grey, white and red, this sets the time in which the thriller was created. This effective transition use of splitting the word psycho into three sections and making them move left and right and different times this creates a very shadowy atmosphere reflecting the genre on the film. The cinematography use of mid shots showing everything in the frame with the titles and names. The way the transitions of the words comes together, this is argued to show it is a psychological the story line of the film, how lots of different pieces of information are put together to finally reveal an answer. These transitions are repeated in slight different ways- the use of repetition of the same thing is a common feature of psychological thrillers.
