Visual Obsession Push it to the ninth degree…. Phil Hansen What is his main message about creativity?

To begin…. Choose an image or a technique from any of the projects we have worked on so far. (Anti-cliché collage, Inventive Drawing, or Chasing Away Cliché)

Next…. Review the Post Modern Principles of Design….

How do artistic elements and principles help artists create meaning in art? What are the new elements and principles of today’s art? How can understanding elements and principles help us to understand art today? How does an artist, that works within self imposed limitations, seem to have more creative and unique outcomes? Essential Questions

Elements & Principles of Today’s Art Traditionally, the elements and principles of art are the visual building blocks of art and design used by Western artists to express ideas or emotions in art. Artists learn how to work with the elements (line, shape, color, texture, value, space) by applying principles such as balance, movement, rhythm, contrast, emphasis, pattern and unity. The following slides show how contemporary artists can still use the modernist principles.

Movement Julie Mehruetu : Stadia 1

Rhythm Richard Tuttle: Stacked Color Drawing

Contrast Judy Pfaff: New Morning

Emphasis Lari Pittman: Untitled #17

Pattern Mark Bradford

Balance Ida Applebroog: Noble Fields

Unity Nancy Spero: The Hours of the Night

For much contemporary art being made today, the content or meaning is more important than the materials or forms used to make it. Until very recently, artists were making art that would engage viewers visually through subject matter and the composition of elements and principles. Contemporary artists seem to be more interested in engaging viewers conceptually through ideas and issues. The elements of art are often not adequate to understand the meaning of contemporary art. **We will just quickly look over the following slides.** Post Modern slides

John Baldessari Pure Beauty Appropriation

Juxtaposition Robert Rauschenberg Monogram

Recontextualization Hannah Hoch Heads of State

Layering Sigmar Polke

Hybridity Huang Yong Ping The History of Chinese Painting and the History of Modern Western Art Washed in the Washing Machine for Two Minutes

Interaction of Text & Image Raymond Pettibon

The idea is to take that image or technique and rework it again and again and again to hopefully break out of old habits and to experience how many artists develop a series. We are working toward creating a ‘Visual Diary’. Thinking about the principles And new art making techniques take the image or technique that you chose and create a series of nine works
