Elements & Principles of Today’s Art Traditionally, the elements and principles of art are the visual building blocks of art and design used by Western artists to express ideas or emotions in art. Artists learn how to work with the elements (line, shape, color, texture, value, space) by applying principles such as balance, movement, rhythm, contrast, emphasis, pattern and unity. The following slides show how contemporary artists can still use the modernist principles.
