Presentation transcript:

 Different shapes  Depends on their role in chewing food  Ex. Incisors, Canines, Molars  All have the same structure  Periodontium – the area immediately around the teeth.  Gums, periodontal ligament, and jawbone

 Crown  Visible portion  Covered with Enamel  Neck  Root

 Bacteria is a threat, bacteria lives on sugar in food  Plaque – sticky, colorless film that acts on sugar to form acids that destroy tooth enamel and irritate gums  Plaque builds  Bacteria thrive  Acid forms  Enamel breaks down  Cavities/holes form

 Brush after eating  Floss  Regular visits to dentist  Cut sugars from diet

 Halitosis – bad breath  Periodontal disease/gum disease – inflamation of periodontal structures.  Begins with build of and hardening of plaque (tartar)  Malocclusion – bad bite  Extra teeth  Upper and lower jaws not in line  Leads to decay/disease  Affects speech and ability to chew
