 STAR Reading Pre Test Instructions

What is the Star Reading Assessment?  STAR Reading Assessment is a computer-adaptive reading assessment that will help you and your teacher to make decisions about your learning, track your reading progress, and help you know if you’re mastering the skills you need to learn.

How is the test designed?  The STAR Reading Assessment is made up of sentences and passages. For each passage there is only one question to answer.  The test is computer-adaptive. This means that the passages and questions adjust in difficulty based on how you answer each question.

When will I take the test?  You will complete the assessment in your reading class.  You can expect to take this assessment up to four times this year. Each time will give you and your teacher more information about how your reading is improving.

How do I get started?

 You will enter your district-issued username and password to access the test.

How do I get started?  Click on the blue STAR Reading button to begin the test.

How do I get started?  You may be asked to select a teacher’s name. Please select your reading teacher’s name from the choices listed on the screen.

How do I get started?  When everyone is ready, your teacher will share the monitor password with you.

During Testing  The questions in the first part of the test each have a sentence with a word missing. There will be a list of three or four words that could fit in the blank.

During Testing  Your job is to choose the word that best completes the sentence.

During Testing  The next group of questions will have more than one sentence. One of the sentences will have a word missing. From the list of answers, choose the word that best completes the sentence. You will be given enough time for these questions, so don’t rush.

During Testing  Additional passages will have questions used to gather information about your comprehension. Read the passage, then read the question for the passage. From the list of choices, choose the best answer for the question. You will be given enough time for these questions, so don’t rush.

During Testing

 When you choose an answer, a blue highlight will appear around it. This only shows you which answer you selected. It does not mean that you selected the correct answer.

During Testing

 If you see a picture of a clock at the top of the screen, time to answer the question is ending. Choose your answer quickly. If you don’t choose an answer in time, you will see a message that says time is up for that question. The next question will come up in a few seconds, so be ready.

During Testing  Before you take the test, you will get some practice questions. The practice questions look just like the real test.  If you see this message when you are answering the practice questions, you should raise your hand so the teacher can assist you. He or she will know what to do.

After Testing  Upon completion of the test, you will receive a message letting you know you are finished. You will be returned to the Renaissance Place Welcome screen. Please read your personal reading book while you wait for classmates to finish.  Do not be concerned if you are still testing while others are finishing. Every test is different because it adjusts based on answers you give. Some tests will take longer than others.

STAR Reading  If you have any questions about this test, please ask them now. Once the test starts, the teacher will not be able to explain any of the words to you or tell you if you have picked the right answer.
