Here is the Assignment Analyze the various views regarding hydraulic fracturing in the oil and gas industry and assume you are a member of the U.S. House of Representatives who is trying to convince the Energy and Commerce Committee EITHER (1) to compose legislation that (if finally approved by Congress) would prevent the procedure from being used OR (2) to endorse the procedure used in the industry.

How Long Does It Have to Be? Write an 8-10 page paper that you would present to the committee defending your position. (You will write a brief weekly paper on the subject, as well.)

What Should Be Included? Use information from the Nov. 11 class presentation by Joann Hochstein, LSC Geology Professor; from your assignments in Current Issues and Enduring Questions on hydraulic fracturing (fracking), Pages ; from the Web sites I have listed below; and other sources you choose.

How Many Sources Are Required? You must have 10 sources for a bibliography, four of those must be cited in the text of the paper and on the references page. Any fewer sources than the 10 for a bibliography and four for the text/references will lower the essay grade.

More Information Find information that gives the history of fracking (see information about George P. Mitchell, the inventor) and do your best to describe the procedure.

Visual Enhancements Images (photographs, charts, graphs, etc.) that are relevant to the issue may be used. Remember to present both sides of the argument, but emphasize your position with objective data, sources, etc., that you feel reinforces your opinion.
