Pablo Picasso Pablo Picasso (1881 – 1973) was one of the most influential artist of the twentieth century. Picasso used a variety of styles during his career but was perhaps best known for his surrealist paintings. Picasso used simple geometrical shapes and sharp, contrasting colors to created exaggerated representations of people and other objects.

Self Portrait 1907 Self Portrait from 1907 by Pablo Picasso was painted around the same time as his famous Les Demoiselles d'Avignon painting. The portrait is mask-like and possibly influenced by African art, which the artist had a fascination with.

Analyzing Poetry and Visual Art 1.Determine the subject of the work? What does your eyes focus on? 2.Consider the elements such as colors, lines and images. Are the colors cheerful? Are the lines smooth and flowing or rough and jagged? What mood or overall emotion does it create? 3.Identify feelings or ideas expressed by the images. Could some of the images act as a symbol? 4.What is the artist’s tone or attitude toward the subject? 5.Summarize the imagery, mood, and tone?

The Dove of Peace (1962) Ink and Water color

The Dove of Peace Picasso began drawing his dove symbols in 1950 in response to the United States' use of atomic bombs in World War II. What might the dove symbolize? The dove and the glowing sun represent the simplicity and beauty of the natural world, as opposed to the complications of war.

The Dove of Peace In the dove’s beak is an olive branch, which is another symbol. What do you think it represents? How is the use of this image poetic? An olive branch represents two different groups of people reaching out to each other. The image symbolizes peace.

The Dove of Peace Poetry uses imagery to express ideas in unique ways. What idea does the dove’s perch express? How is the image poetic? The dove is perched on a pile of weapons. This might express the idea that the dove (peace) has been affected by war.

The Dove of Peace Artists, like poets, create mood by the way they portray a subject. What mood does Picasso express about the chance for peace? The artist expresses a pessimistic mood about the chances for peace. Even the dove of peace is using weapons as a perch.
