Exam Advice 1.Read all the instructions on the front of the exam paper 2.Read the questions carefully once twice & then again to make sure you know what you are being asked to do. 3.Underline or highlight key words to help focus your answer 4.Be aware of how many marks each question is worth, and therefor how many facts or responses you need to give. 5.Get to know the key words or command words that will be used in the exam such as the words shown in the following table

Key WordsWhat it means you should do Identify/ Suggest/ give reasonsWrite down a list. DescribeGive details about something e.g how something works or what it looks like. ExplainIdentify a point, write down the meaning of it clearly, then follow it with reasons to show you understand it. AnalyseSeparate a topic into its various parts in order to be able to identify and explain it. EvaluateAssess a topic & say why it is important or what you have learned from it. Types of Questions Structured Questions – these types of questions usually give you a piece of information & then ask specific questions. Data Response Questions- usually give some data then ask specific questions about it. Free Response Questions- These type of questions ask you to write about a specific topic, they often use the words ‘explain’, ‘describe’ or ‘discuss’, but leave it up to you to decide the structure of your answer, which should include facts, examples & opinions
