VOCABULARY #17 PUT, NOTA, RATIO, SCI CRIMIN, CULP, ONUS/ONER, PROB/PROV

Latin: PUTARE, PUTATUM— “to think” PUT

1. Impute (verb) Example: The car’s manufacturer imputed the steering problems to faulty tires. What does impute mean? Impute – to assign blame or responsibility for Synonym – attribute Antonym – vindicate

2. Dispute (verb, noun) Example 1: Lisa disputed my claim that she was always late; in fact, she said, she was usually early. Example 2: The city council was divided by the dispute over sales taxes. Dispute example 1(verb)–to disagree with Synonym – deny Antonym - agree 2 (noun)- a disagreement or argument Dispute example 2 (noun)- a disagreement or argument Synonym – argument Antonym - agreement

3. Disreputable (adj.) Example: The disreputable doctor allowed his patients to go for months or years without treatment. What does disreputable mean? Disreputable– Not respectable; having a bad reputation Synonym –notorious Antonym - respectable

4. Connotation (noun) Example: I fully understand the negative connotation of the word you used to describe me. What does connotation mean? Connotation – an image or idea associated with a word Synonym – overtone

5. Denotation (noun) Example: In order to grasp the denotation of the word, I looked it up in several dictionaries. What does denotation mean? Denotation – the dictionary definition of a word

6. Annotate (verb) Example: The difficult book would have attracted more readers if the author had decided to annotate it. What does annotate mean? Annotate – to explain or discuss through a note

Latin: RATIO— “reason” RATIO

Example: As a child, Christopher was teased for his irrational fear of water. What does irrational mean? Irrational – not based on reason or logic Synonym – illogical Antonym – reasonable, rational 7. Irrational (adj.)

8. Rationale (noun) Example: What rationale does the author provide for designing the book this way? What does rationale mean? Rationale – A reason for doing something; explanation

9. Rationalize (verb) Example: I tried my best to rationalize spending so much money on one piece of furniture. What does rationalize mean? Rationalize –Justify; give reason for Synonym – excuse

Latin: SCIRE— “to know” SCI

10. Conscientious (adj. ) Example: Rebecca was a conscientious student and a leader in several school clubs. What does conscientious mean? Conscientious – diligent and careful Antonym– careless

11. Unconscionable (adj.) Example: The current administration’s repeal of environmental laws has been called unconscionable by many naturalists. What does unconscionable mean? Unconscionable –Not obeying moral laws Antonym – principled

12. Prescient (adj.) Example: The baseball coach made some decisions that now seem amazingly prescient. What does prescient mean? Prescient – showing knowledge of events before they happen Synonym – far-sighted Antonym – rash
