Slogan Goes Here Senate Bill 340 On June 15, 1995, Missouri Governor Mel Carnahan signed into law Senate Bill 340 which gave Missouri State University a statewide mission in public affairs. This mission defines a primary way in which a Missouri State education is different from that of other universities and one way by which we educate our students to imagine the future.

Slogan Goes Here Our Public Affairs Mission Our Public Affairs Mission can be articulated through the three broad themes. ETHICAL LEADERSHIP CULTURAL COMPETENCE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Slogan Goes Here Ethical Leadership 1 Ethical Leadership is striving for excellence and integrity as one continually develops ethical and moral reasoning while contributing to the common good. Ethical leaders have the courage to live by their principles in all parts of their personal and professional lives.

Slogan Goes Here Ethical Leadership 2 Ethical leadership, the first of the three components that Missouri State is using to not only teach, but grow their students into Missouri's future. Missouri State is fueling their students by helping them understand the ethical dimensions of leadership, taking what they learn in the classrooms, and using that to help solve problems and bring about change.

Slogan Goes Here Cultural Competence 1 Cultural Competence begins with cultural self-awareness and expands to knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures. Culturally competent individuals respect multiple perspectives and are able to successfully negotiate cross- cultural differences.

Slogan Goes Here Cultural Competence 2 The second component that Missouri State is using to make Missouri's future is cultural competence. Missouri State builds up its students' cultural knowledge through several outlooks. Study abroad, international students, and even the ability to study different language, history, and religion courses throughout their academic career broadens their horizon to help build relationships, and bring about better competition for the future.

Slogan Goes Here Community Engagement 1 Community Engagement is recognizing needs in the communities within which one belongs, then contributing knowledge and working with the community to meet those needs. Community engagement requires extending beyond one's self for the betterment of the community - a process that fosters greater awareness and personal growth.

Slogan Goes Here Community Engagement 2 Community engagement is the final component Missouri State is providing for their students. This aspect takes their classroom knowledge beyond the books, tests, and classrooms. It lets them branch out and see how the world is working through a different lens, giving them the opportunity to work with their communities and build up their ability to lead in their careers.

Slogan Goes Here Public Affairs Essay This Public Affairs Essay was written by Dr. Rachelle L. Darabi, who is the Associate Provost for Student Development and Public Affairs.Public Affairs Essay It appears in Missouri State Magazine, the magazine published for alumni and friends of Missouri State University.

Slogan Goes Here Public Affairs Essay 1 This development of specific goals related to the public affairs mission signals the significance of the mission and the importance of its integration into the curriculum. Community engagement, cultural competence and ethical leadership are evident in the curriculum of all the colleges and in every department. Units demonstrate the mission in different ways; however, all of them affect not only the campus community but also the larger community.

Slogan Goes Here Public Affairs Essay 2 Many opportunities to learn about the tenets of the mission exist within the classroom where students, faculty and the community are bound together. Opportunities are found beyond the classroom as well. The division of student affairs promotes student engagement on- and off- campus. All of these opportunities build skills in our students that will ultimately benefit the larger community.
