ADAPTED FROM: RYAN AND DECI (2000) - INTRINSIC AND EXTRINSIC MOTIVATIONS: CLASSIC DEFINITIONS AND NEW DIRECTIONS MOTIVATION

What motivates you to do your job well? What motivates you to go to the gym ? What motivates you to call your mother ?

NO MOTIVATION AT ALL Not motivated at all because: -doesn’t value the activity -Doesn’t feel competent -Doesn’t believe it is possible to reach the required result

TWO TYPES OF MOTIVATION Intrinsic – you love what you do; you enjoy doing it; Extrinsic – you do it because you get rewarded in some way or because you get punished if you don’t do it

INTRINSIC You enjoy what you do because : -It is interesting; it’s challenging -You are good at it (even though it’s a challenge) -You are in control; it’s your responsibility

EXTRINSIC You do your job because you get a reward : -The bigger the reward  the more motivated you are -The bigger the possibility of getting the reward  the more motivated you are

REWARD Immediate reward : bonus Long term reward : degree, promotion, salary increase

LONG TERM VISION I could be rewarded later : -Promotion -Good pension -Good company (stable, good name, good package) -Seniority

NON PHYSICAL REWARD Subject acts to: -Avoid guilt (I got this job because of my father; my parents would worry if I didn’t have this job) -Avoid anxiety (I don’t feel good if I don’t do this job well) -Feel better about themselves -Get approval from themselves or others (parents will be proud)

INTRINSIC OR EXTRINSIC? Some people start working somewhere for money but they end up liking what they do. = first extrinsic, afterward intrinsic How does that happen?

HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN? Competence: I’m good at this! Leadership: good boss Atmosphere: good colleagues Gained interest

ADDITION TO RYAN AND DECI Cultural differences Your motivation for a job can have multiple sources Your motivation can change over time People are the biggest motivator (colleagues, boss, clients) Importance of feedback

DISCUSS IN GROUP - INTERNSHIP Ask yourself and each other: - Were you motivated? - Who or what motivated you? Compare your answers How would you motivate interns/employees if you were in the position of supervisor/manager? Are different forms of motivation necessary for different positions/departments ? What about different cultures ?

WRITE Write a one page document: name, company, position/department of each member compare how you were motivated

FORMAT Times New Roman – 12 – double spaced One topic for each paragraph Leave a blanc space between paragraphs No Q&A but full text Add examples to make it clearer (if applicable and helpful) Check your spelling (use spell check) Read it again to see if it makes sense

DEADLINE Monday 11 May at 4pm Decent – attachment + name document: psy motivation - name + name + name

MS./MRS. SCHATS Ms. Katrien Ms. Scatch Ms Schatts Ms. A hats

FEEDBACK Did you get feedback ? On a regular basis or at the end? What about informal feedback ? How was it given? How was the formal feedback given?
