Tudor England

Henry VIII  The first English monarchs to take great pains over their public image  Always tried to impress others with his money & power  Henry, was athletic, very intelligent

Henry VIII  Had to impress people with his money (Fields of Gold)  Convinced other nobles to work with him, not against the monarchy-they were well paid  England was in a stable position and respected in Europe.  Henry VII kept England out of major European conflicts & arranged the marriage of his other son (Arthur) to the princess of Spain, Catherine of Aragon

Catherine of Aragon  Henry’s 1 st Wife  Had 4 miscarriages before giving birth to a male who died 7 weeks later (1511)  Gave birth to a girl, Mary in 1516  Henry wanted to divorce her, but the Pope would not allow it

Anne Boleyn  1529-Henry cut ties with the Catholic Church and married Anne Boleyn  Anne had two miscarriages.  Henry tired of her and in April 1536 she was accused of committing adultery with 5 men, including her own brother.  Anne and the five men were all executed in May 1536

Jane Seymour  Jane did give Henry one son, Edward  She died in 1537, leaving Henry devastated

The Six Wives of Henry VIII

What Henry VIII Believed  God had had created society as it was and that this society should not change or be challenged  Women were inferior to men  Those who were born into poverty were there because that was the way God ordained it to be  The social order of England had to be maintained at all costs  Leading a joyful, fun life was expected of the king
