Chapter 8 – Safe and Healthy Friendships

 A give-and-take relationship based on mutual trust, acceptance, and common interests or values.  People look to friends for honest reactions, for encouragement during bad times, and for understanding when they make mistakes.

 Casual Friendships  Close Friendships  Friendships with the opposite sex  Platonic friendships  Online Friendships

 These are friends that may be your neighbors or people you see everyday.

 These are friends with the following traits:  Loyalty – a good friend sticks by you in both the good times and bad. Your friend likes you for who you are.  Honesty – You can trust a good friend to be truthful with you, even when the truth is painful.  Empathy – a good friend is caring and sensitive to your feelings.  Reliability – a close friend can always be counted on. You know your friend will try hard not to let you down.

 Gender roles – these are the behaviors and attitudes that are socially accepted as either masculine or feminine.  Gender roles may vary from culture to culture.

 A friendship with a member of the opposite gender in which there is affection, but the two people are not considered a couple.

 Peer Pressure – the influence that people your age may have on you.(Can be positive peer pressure also)  Harassment – persistently annoying others.  Manipulation – indirect, dishonest way to control or influence other people.  Common manipulation include: Making threats, blackmail, flattery, guilt trips, bribing, teasing.

 What is abstinence? Is it important to you? Why or why not?

 Abstinence – a deliberate decision to avoid high risk behaviors, including sexual activity, and use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs.  Priorities – the goals, task, values, and activities that you judge to be more important then others.  Intimacy – closeness between two people that develops over time.  Infatuation – exaggerated feelings of passion.  Self Control – is a person’s ability to use responsibility to override emotions.

 Sexually Transmitted Diseases – infectious diseases spread from person to person through sexual contact.  1 in 4 teens contracts an STD/STI every year.  An estimated four in 10 sexually active adolescent females between the ages of 14 and 19 have an STD  Unplanned Pregnancies  Effects on mental/emotional/social health

 Teens & Adults – could have been sexually active, using alcohol, and/or drugs and RECOMMITT to Abstinence.  It is always an option
