Guenther and Comer’s GROW Project

What is our topic? “How does Calcium and Magnesium get into our drinking water and how do they affect the human body?”

How does Calcium and Magnesium get into our water? *-Percentage FDA recommended for daily intake per liter for adults. Large cities’ tap water comes from springs, aquifers, or other sources of groundwater. The minerals get into the water in two ways. If they are adjacent to the water where it is being stored, it will leach into the water. The other possible way is for running water to erode the mineral as the water flows past the minerals. How does Magnesium get into our bottled water? Minerals get into bottled water in two different ways also. Many companies, such as Dasani, will add certain minerals (Calcium and Magnesium) after purifying the water. They do this because if the water was completely pure water, it would have no taste. Otherwise, the minerals were already in the water when the companies collect the water. Suggestions According to our research, there are multiple things people should do to protect themselves. First, the amount of minerals gained by drinking a bathtub of water is about the same on average as one small glass of juice. Because of this, do not even consider water as a source for your mineral needs. Also, even though Calcium and Magnesium can be healthy for you in the right amounts, too much of either mineral is dangerous. If the population was informed they would do this without even thinking about it.

Wrap-Up We had a pretty easy time with this project. Our only obstacle was that at the beginning of the project it was difficult to come up with a question we were both interested in. Also, Charlie was not in school Friday, slightly affecting our progress. At the very end of this project we found an answer to our topic. The truth is that Calcium and Magnesium are in such trace amounts in our drinking water that it does not affect the human body mainly. As long as there are no radioactive or poisonous materials in drinking water, we are fine.
