Presentation transcript:

IYA2009 legacy An increased awareness by society that we are living in an extraordinary era of discoveries about the universe A modern image of astronomers in the eyes of the public A clear demonstration that a career in astronomy is also for women and minorities The creation of international networks of scientists, communicators, teachers and amateurs, which should remain in existence much beyond 2009 A wealth of educational material on astronomy (e.g. Galileoscope) Books, films, movies for television, DVDs, theater, planetarium shows, and music related to astronomy(e.g. Eyes on the sky) and the fostering of many vocations, at the professional and the amateur level

Beyond IYA2009 logo

IYA2009 legacy A comprehensive final online-only report, an Executive Summary printed brochure and a coffee table book on IYA The cornerstones can survive 2009: IYA was a step forward in the designation of astronomical sites by the UNESCO Word Heritage program “ Portal to the Universe” is meant to continue in existence at ESO, as the ultimate source of astronomical news for the public The SIAA site can remain in existence 100 Hours of Astronomy: Large-scale public observing programmes will continue The FETTU project will remain and be updated The Galileoscope will become a commercial product (more expensive) Dark sky awareness activities will continue Cosmic Diary will remain open and produce a book Most special projects will also survive

IYA2009 legacy IYA2009 is a springboard for the enhancement of IAU educational activities (strategic plan) Incorporation of some cornerstones in the IAU plans: – Openings for astronomy in developing countries, at the professional and amateur level, and consolidation of links with IAU – Organized efforts to improve teaching of astronomy in particular, and science in general, at the world level – UNAWE, a program to create an international awareness of our place in the universe and on Earth, addressed to children in underprivileged environments
