~ In 1912 Alfred Wegener noticed that the continents fir together like a puzzle and the continents once compressed in a protocontinent which he called Pangaea. ~ Scientists did not the theory of a ‘super continent’ because the wasn’t much proof to support Wegener's theory. He didn’t have an explanation for why the continents moved. ~ Pangaea means all lands. Pangaea occurred in late carboniferous time about 300 million years ago, the continents started to break up and drift apart ~ The “contraction theory” which suggested that the planet was once a molten ball and in the process of cooling the surface cracked and folded up on itself, was being discusses when Wegener introduced Pangaea. ~ Wegener had a PH.D in astronomy. This relates to his discoveries because he atmosphere can fit together like a puzzle just like the continents. ~ Arthur Holmes elaborated on Wegener's hypothesis that “The mantle undergoes thermal convection. The theories relate because if a substance is heated up it will rise the surface until it cools and this can beak apart a continent egener.html

~ Convergent boundaries are places where plates crash or crunch together. ~ Earthquakes, volcanoes, trenches, mountains, mud/land slides, etc, are characteristics of a convergent boundaries. ~ An example of a convergent boundaries is on the west coast of South America where a oceanic Nazca Plate is crushing into South America. The crash formed the Andes Mts., a long stream of volcanoes, and a deep trench. nt.shtml
~ Divergent Boundaries are places where plates are coming apart. ~ Earthquakes, mountains, and volcanoes, form in the characteristics of a divergent boundary. ~ An example is in the east Africa rift in Kenya and Ethiopia, and the Rio Grande rift in New Mexico. A divergent Boundary crosses the ocean floor the rift valley is much narrower. It runs along the top of a midoceanic ridge. ese/earthsysflr/plates2.html
~ Transform Boundaries are places where plates slide past each other. ~ Earthquakes, and Volcanoes are hazard characteristics for a transform boundary. ~ An example of a Transform Boundary is the San Andrea’s Fault the slice of California to the wet of the fault is slowly moving north relative to the rest of California. nt.shtml
Geology.com Pate Tectonic Map ~ We are located on the North American plate ~ The North American, Pacific Plate, Eurasian plate, Nazca Plate, South American Plate, and the African Plate border or contain the united states. ~ The San Andreas fault, The slice of California to the west of the fault is slowly moving north relative to the rest of California. ~ I predict that the plates will keep on moving and connect again but on there other sides in the distant future.
