Energy Transformations

 Energy comes in many forms that are interchangeable and is always conserved in a closed system.

Nuclear Energy  Energy stored inside the atom  Atom: all matter is made up of atoms, which we will study more later in the chemistry unit  Energy stored inside the atom  Atom: all matter is made up of atoms, which we will study more later in the chemistry unit

Kinetic Energy  The energy of motion  Also known as mechanical energy  The energy of motion  Also known as mechanical energy

Chemical Energy  The energy stored in molecules

Sound Energy  The energy carried by vibrations

Thermal Energy  The energy an object has as a result of the motion of its molecules  Also known as heat energy  The energy an object has as a result of the motion of its molecules  Also known as heat energy

Radiant Energy  Energy that travels as electromagnetic waves  Most common is light energy

Electrical Energy  The energy associated with moving electric charges

Energy Transformation Equation  Changes in energy can be summarized using an energy-transformation equation.

Energy Transformation Equation  For example,a microwave oven transforms electrical energy into radiant energy (microwaves), which in turn is transformed into thermal energy which cooks the food. Therefore  electrical energy  light energy  heat energy  For example,a microwave oven transforms electrical energy into radiant energy (microwaves), which in turn is transformed into thermal energy which cooks the food. Therefore  electrical energy  light energy  heat energy

Energy Transformation Technology  The microwave is an example of an energy-transformation technology, which is a device used to transform energy for a specific purpose.

Generator System  A generator system converts mechanical energy into electrical energy.  The key parts of a generator are a turbine, shaft, and the generator itself.  Any type of energy that can be used to turn a turbine can be used to generate electrical energy.  The mechanical energy turns the turbine and rotates a magnet within a wire coil, causing the charged particles in the wire to move.  A generator system converts mechanical energy into electrical energy.  The key parts of a generator are a turbine, shaft, and the generator itself.  Any type of energy that can be used to turn a turbine can be used to generate electrical energy.  The mechanical energy turns the turbine and rotates a magnet within a wire coil, causing the charged particles in the wire to move.
