Native Americans In 1763 South Carolina became a state! Before the settlers arrived Native Americans ruled the land. From the tribes of the Cherokee and, the Catawba. The Catawba lived in the foothills of South Carolina. The Cherokee lived in the Appellation mountains that crossed into South Carolina. These tribes used nearby resources like bark and, animal fur. They also traded when the settlers arrived. Native Americans traded animal fur, corn, flour, spices and, squash

Settlers In 1629 King Charles the first of England wanted more land, he wanted to start a new colony. Then after the King got the land he wanted he decided it was to much. So he split the land forming North and South Carolina! He gave North and South Carolina to his friend Sir Robert Heath. But King Charles Came up with the name Carolina. That’s when settlers started to move into these colonies. In 1776, April 12 th the Declaration of Independence was sinned! But then in colonist's fought for their independence agented Brittan and that war was called the Great Brittan war! In 1712 Native Americans had to share their land with the settler's that were moving in. The Yamassee tribe became angry because settlers were not treating them unfairly! This started the Yamassee war! Eventually the Indians lost and were forced to leave South Carolina. Settlers raised pigs, cattle, chicken and, turkeys!

!Pirates! In 1718 Blackbeard the famous pirate came to South Carolina and threatened the colony! Later he took over the city of Charles town Harbor South Carolina!

Fast Facts Their state flower is a yellow rose with a orange center. South Carolina is the golfing state. There state tree is a palm tree. They are also known for there fishing! They get lots of rain mild winters, hot summers, rainy springs and, warm falls! There capital is Charles town, they are near the Atlantic ocean.

Work Many Settlers worked. They had a law, if you do not work you do not eat! They grew rice, the rice was then shipped to England and it made so much money South Carolina became one of the richest colonies! They also grew indigo, to make blue dye, they used the die for coloring clothes. Some settlers owned slaves to do their work for them

Slaves Slaves were very popular in South Carolina. The settlers would oxen them and sell them for money! Some believed that slaves were people to others did not! Many slaves knew how to grow rice and indigo. slaves children 15 and older were forced to work! Women-cooked, cleaned, made clothes, and sometimes farmed! Men- farmed, hunted, and were personal slaves to their owners.

Early Settler’s When proprietors first came to Carolina they founded Charles town. That was good because Charles town is near a big river, so they could ship goods ware ever they wanted because that river fled into the ocean. Then in 1712 the proprietors decided to rule South Carolina separately. That’s when the English settlements made life different for the Native Americans that lived in South Carolina. If you remember on slide 3 on Native Americans, it talked about the Yamassee war, that’s what took place next.
