8-2.1 ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL CONSEQUENCES OF THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR South Carolina and other American colonies became involved in the military and economic rivalry between BRITAIN and FRANCE

The FRANCH AND INDIAN began when the French moved into the OHIO VALLEY, which was claimed by the British. It was named this because the British were fighting the France and her INDIAN allies. (The CHEROKEE had allied themselves with the British) This war was called the SEVEN YEARS WAR in Europe South Carolina had little military involvement in the French and Indian War but it did contribute to the CHEROKEE WAR in South Carolina.

CHEROKEE WAR The British failed to protect the Cherokee when the FRENCH and their Indian allies attacked. Cherokee warriors, feeling cheated by the British, stole some settler’s HORSES. White settlers attacked and the Cherokee RETALIATED The royal governor of SC stopped all TRADE with the Cherokee and made HOSTAGES of the Cherokee leaders who had come for peace talks in Charles Towne. The Cherokee then attacked SETLEMENTS in the piedmont and mountains. The war lasted two years. Many Cherokee were killed. The treaty that ended the war forced the Cherokee to GIVE UP MUCH OF THEIR LAND AND CREATED A BOUNDARY BETWEEN SC AND CHEROKEE LAND

The British won the bigger French and Indian War. EFFECT OF THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR France LOST HER POSSESSIONS in North America Spain lost FLORIDA to the British During the war the British FINALLY tried to enforce their MERCANTILISM laws.

The SUGAR was passed by the British parliament to stop Americans from illegally trading with the French. Smugglers were tried in special courts without the use of JURIES which the colonies felt violated one of their basic rights. The war caused Britain to go deep into DEBT. The British felt the Americans should pay for the debt since much of the war was fought to protect America. This led the British to pass other TAXES which the colonies resisted.
