●50 years ago today, the March on Washington took place (originally called March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom). ●It was attended by 250,000+ people and was the largest demonstration for social change at that time. ●It was the setting that Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous I Have a Dream speech. What Happened

The Speech

●In commemoration of the March, King’s son, President Obama, and many others will be speaking at today’s rally. ●Marchers will take the same path as protesters 50 years ago. ●At 3:05 PM EST, the time that King Jr. gave his speech, churches across the nation will be ringing their bells. Today’s Events

●Many question whether Dr. King’s dream has been fulfilled. ●The racial segregation that divided the country by law has long been ended, but: ○ Economically, African Americans haven’t gained much more wealth compared to whites. ○ African Americans are more likely to be incarcerated or be victims of violent crime. ○ African Americans have the lowest college enrollment rate. Remaining Questions

1. Who gave one of the most famous speeches 50 years ago today? 2. Describe in your own words why it might be important to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington. 3. Do you think it is important that we foster equality in America? Why or why not? Audience Questions
