The Roots of a Culture’s Value System

Coaching in Multicultural Environments Communication Latin American cultures are diffuse and particularist. Due to the need to build relationships, people prefer to do business in person and not on the telephone. Communication styles are indirect, serious, subjective, expressive, and sometimes argumentative. Formality and hospitality are important. An eloquent person is seen as having high status, wisdom, and intellect.

Communication (cont.) Tips for doing business Be prepared to be interrupted when you are talking. Respect formal titles and positions. Be prepared to discuss topics other than business. Learn about famous Latin American authors, artists, etc. Be more expressive and emotional in your behavior. Be patient when listening to circuitous communication. Coaching in Multicultural Environments

Nonverbal Cues Latin Americans stand closer than North Americans. Good manners (including table manners) and formalities are important. How you dress is important. More physical contact, and kisses. Shaking hands is important. Coaching in Multicultural Environments

Nonverbal Cues (cont.) Tips for doing business Don’t appear cold. Expect more frequent touching. Dress professionally and be well groomed. Coaching in Multicultural Environments

Time High value on history and traditions. Past and present orientations. Change is not always positive. Business, social, and family overlap. Polychronic time orientation. Coaching in Multicultural Environments

Time (cont.) Tips for doing business Don’t get angry if meetings don’t start on time or are interrupted. Be punctual anyway in a business setting. Be “fashionably late” for a social invitation. Understand that business takes longer than in the US. Expect deadlines to be flexible. Social and family obligations are more important than deadlines. Show respect for traditions and present values.
