The protagonist of the Catholic holiday - Santa Claus - should necessarily bring gifts on Christmas night. In XVII century it was first mentioned as "Christmas Elf" with a big nose and a white beard and red cap on his head. He went down through the chimney when the house was asleep, and gifts to obedient children gifts. According to the legend of Santa Claus on Christmas night, flying in his magic sleigh over the sleeping city, and down through the chimney in the house, leaving presents for children in stockings, socks or shoes that are specifically left under the tree, or hang over the fireplace.

Russian people, too, have their own Santa – Father Frost, but he comes to New Year's night and is not accompanyied by his elvesbut by his granddaughter Snow Maiden. He also gives presents, delighting children and adults.

Besides, in Russia there is a custom of leaving a burning candle in the window on Christmas night in order to Jesus Christ knows that he is awaited for in the house.
