 The most important thing is to be knowledgeable about the mentor’s research. Why?  How are you going to learn about the mentor’s research?

 Read abstracts  Read primary articles, including review articles  Summarize research in your own words

 Read background material from an advanced textbook  Come to SGI and talk to ME!  Summarize the readings in your own words  Why is it important to write it in your own words?

 Look in the discussion section of the primary article  Especially the last paragraphs

 Why is it a good idea to try to anticipate questions that you might be asked in the interview?  What kinds of questions do you think you will be asked?

 Why are you interested in doing a research project?  Why are you interested in our lab?  When are you available to work? (stress that you will be working full time for the next 2 summers)  What ideas do you have for a research project?

 Arrive early  Bring a notebook, pen, mentor’s articles  You can take notes during the interview  Dress appropriately=business casual  Boys: shirt with collar and khaki pants  Girls: pants or skirt (knee length), blouse or sweater with a jacket, no skin exposed

 I am giving you each one copy of a handout that you should copy and give to the mentor which will include my contact information   I do not have a phone in my office at Bronx Science, but if they want to speak with me, ask them to me and I will send them my cell phone number
