Transition to Year 1 Challenge Time The children will continue to have access to discovery learning outside and inside through continuous provision. They are set a challenge linked to the National Curriculum to complete each day during this time. Learning is purposeful, resources linked to the curriculum and adult interactions ensure progression. A greater proportion of time is spent in directed activities during Year 1.

The Curriculum Children will be accessing the National Curriculum. The key subject areas are: English, Maths, Science, Religious Education, ICT, History, Geography, PE, PSHE, Art and Design, Design Technology, Music and Philosophy.

Autumn Term- Topic The topic for this half term is ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’. This is a geography focused topic, which will be linked where possible to all other subjects. The children have been introduced to Billy Bear. They take him home and then talk about where they have taken him. (Local Area or further afield).

Homework - Topic The homework pyramid contains six tasks to be completed at home which complement the topic for this half term. This can be completed and brought in ad hoc or altogether the week before the half-term holiday. We will have a homework celebration day and it will be displayed in the classroom. Parents welcome to come in/ speak/ teach us about another country in your experience…

Reading- We aim to develop fluency in reading alongside reading with understanding and pleasure!  Phase 4/5 phonics – we follow Letters and Sounds. Daily sessions.  Link learning of sounds to book which is phonetically decodable - sent home on Fridays.  Build stamina for reading. May read 2 pages each day and build up to whole book over time. Aim is to develop confidence and fluency without being put off reading.  Choose a library book each day to share. You can read or when ready, they can read to you. Must be an enjoyable experience.  Link reading to own experiences  Make simple predictions  Maintain attention and participate Literacy

Writing Linked to traditional stories this half term. Children also continue to write about their own interests, building independence and writing for a purpose.  Name letters of the alphabet, and form letters correctly  Spell common “tricky” words and days of the week  Compose sentences orally before writing  Read own writing to others Grammar  Spaces between words and use of “. ? !”  Capital letters for proper nouns  Common plural and verb suffixes Literacy

The children will have the opportunity to develop skills through a range of experiences. These are key skills and are important in accessing the curriculum Speaking and listening  Listen and respond appropriately  Ask relevant questions  Maintain attention and participate We also have “interest” boxes which are sent home. The children bring objects to talk about which are of current interest e.g. natural collections (conkers, acorns – what do they know about their objects), or objects which tell us about about people or placess Literacy

Maths Maths continues to be practical and always involves using objects and real life contexts. Number  Count to/ across 100  Read and write numbers to 20  Count in 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s  Use symbols “+ - =“ and solve sums using numbers up to 20

Maths The children will continue to use cooking so that they can apply their skills in a meaningful context. (please take a letter). Geometry and Measures  Use common comparison vocabulary e.g. heavier  Tell the time to hour/ half-hour and use time language (e.g. before, one week)  Recognise and name common 2D and 3D shapes  Recognise coins and notes Fractions  Recognise ½ and ¼

Biology Identify and name basic plants, animals and body parts Chemistry Distinguish objects and materials, compare, classify and describe simple properties of materials Physics Observe weather associated with changes of season RE God Matters syllabus- Creation Science

Phonics Screening In addition to our teacher assessment and tracking of progress, there is a National Phonics Screening test at the end of Year 1. The purpose is: To have a “benchmark” of where the children are in their learning. To ensure that children who are not on track receive additional support. Phase 5 phonics 1-1 testing by the teacher Mixture of real words and nonsense words Tests for phonic knowledge and skills

Support at Home-Reading Children will take home a colour band book every Friday. These are to be returned the following Wednesday. It is important that children read this book and comments are recorded in their reading diary. Children are also given the opportunity to choose a book from the book corner to share with parents at home. Phonics and maths homework alternate week on Fridays. Hand in by Wednesday.

Break and Lunch Times Healthy snack policy – fruit provision School dinners- 2 choices (red-meat and green- vegetarian). School dinners are free for KS1 children. Please find out if you are entitled to Free School Meals funding as this will provide extra funding to benefit your child at school. (Pupil Premium)

Miscellaneous Cooking Cooking will take place weekly and link to our mathematics. Please send a contribution of £2.00 in a sealed envelope towards ingredients. PE PE will now take place every Friday afternoon. Wellies If all children could bring in a pair of wellies this will mean that outdoor learning as well as break times can continue into the Winter.
