The Workingmen’s Holiday Lead by Unions

Samuel Gompers: AFL “Labor Day is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race, or nation.”

1 st Labor Day??? Maybe started by Peter J. McGuire, cofounder of the AFL??? He suggested a day to honor those “who from rude nature have delved and cared all the grandeur we behold.”

Peter McGuire The Father of Labor Day, of New York City, in 1882 introduced the idea for the holiday.

Or Matthew Maguire, a machinist In 1882, a secretary for the Central Labor Union in N.Y.

1 st Labor Day Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in NYC.

In September 1892 union workers in New York City took an unpaid day off and marched around Union Square in support of the holiday.

1884, the 1 st Monday of Sept. Is selected as the Holiday to honor workers.

1885 Many celebrations For the Workers

Labor Day Legislation 1885 began state legislation. The 1 st Bill passed was in Oregon1887. Colorado, Mass. N.J., & N.Y followed.

President Truman Famous Speech in Michigan

By the end of the 1880’s Connecticut, Nebraska, & Pennsylvania had followed. By other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers.

June 28, 1894 Congress passed an act making the 1 st Monday of September of each year a legal holiday..

A song: "Union Maid" There once was a union maid; She never was afraid Of goons and ginks and company finks And the deputy sheriffs that made the raid. She went to the union hall When a meeting it was called, And when the company boys came 'round She always stood her ground.

Waitresses at Woolworth's staged an eight-day sitdown strike in 1937, singing, dancing, exercising, doing each others hair and nails until finally management recognized their union and gave them a five-cent per hour pay hike.

How to celebrate? Families gather….

Parades to exhibit The strength & esprit de corps of the trade & labor organizations of the community.

Followed by a festival For the recreation & amusement of the workers & their families.

Speeches by famous Michigan March

The vital force of labor has Lead our nation to the highest standard of living & the greatest production the world has ever known.

The American Worker Earned the tribute of Labor Day…… for creating a nation of strength, leadership, and freedom.

Almost a century since Gompers spoke Labor Day is seen as the last long weekend of summer rather than a day for political organizing.

In 1995, less than 15 percent of American workers belonged to unions, down from a high in the 1950's of nearly 50 percent, though nearly all have benefited from the victories of the Labor movement.

Friends and families gather and clog the highways, and the picnic grounds, and their own backyards -- and bid farewell to summer.
