Activity: How Many Toothpicks? M2303-F13Week 1.2 Each group will be given some rubber bands, and Ziploc bags. Each group member will be given a certain number of toothpicks (unknown to you). You are responsible for your own toothpicks, i.e. don’t mix your toothpicks with those of others. Objective: To determine the total number of toothpicks in your group. Constraint: No communication, whatsoever (verbal, written, gestures, etc.), among group members once the game begins. You are not allowed to peep at your group members’ toothpicks. You have to pretend that each of you is working on your own isolated cave.

You are responsible for your own toothpicks, i.e. don’t mix your toothpicks with those of others. Objective: To determine the total number of toothpicks in your group. Before the game begins, your group has 5 minutes to discuss and agree on a strategy so that when all individual members’ toothpicks are put side-by-side, you can very quickly determine the total number of toothpicks by looking and rearranging the toothpicks, without having to perform any arithmetic computations. (Hint: Arrange your toothpicks so that others can visually see how many toothpicks you have.)
