PRESIDENCY FACTS Presidential Campaign: When was he elected-1968 Who did he run against- Hubert Humphrey Who was his Vice President- Richard M. Nixon had two vice presidents; Spiro Agnew (1969–1973),and Gerald Ford (1973–1974). How long did he serve- He served almost his full two terms but he resigned before he could finish the second term. (I will continue on his resignation at the end) Facts/Accomplishments of his Presidency: He made a foreign policy which aimed to reduce international tensions by forging new links with old rivals. As a congressman, he served on the Education and Labor Committee and supported the enactment of the Taft- Hartley Act In 1950, he defeated Democratic Congresswoman Helen Gahagan Douglas to win California's vacant Senate seat by more than half a million votes

WHY NIXON RESIGNED In 1974, President Richard M. Nixon resigns in the wake of the Watergate burglary scandal. He resigned because he lied about the Watergate scandal. He said he had nothing to do with it even though they were working for him to see what the democrats were doing during the presidential campaign. To avoid impeachment, he resigned.

LIFE AFTER NIXON’S PRESIDENCY Where did he go-Nixon and his wife returned to their home in San Clemente, California, where they lived until moving to New York City in In 1981, they moved to northern Bergen County, New Jersey. What did he do- Nixon traveled throughout the United States and dozens of countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Mideast He also helped plan and build his presidential library and birthplace memorial in Yorba Linda. Did he hold other jobs-He joined former presidents Ford and Jimmy Carter as an official representative of the United States to the state funeral of Egyptian President Anwar al-Sadat. Write books-he wrote nine books

SUMMARY What were his greatest strengths-Nixon’s 3 biggest achievements were – 1 - Fully implementing desegregation of schools. 2 - Ending Vietnam under acceptable circumstances. 3 - Opening up relationships with Russia/China. Weaknesses- Watergate scandal Is he considered a good president, why or why not- I believe that Nixon is considered a bad president because of the Woodward addresses. In each case, it may be argued that the President failed to fulfill his oath in Article II, Section I, Clause VIII. In doing so, Nixon caused harm to the office of the presidency. He also lied that he was involved. He resigned his position August 9, 1974 before impeachment proceedings began.
