Page   Page 88-89: Four years earlier Sonny found a calico cat wandering in the mountains, and hid it from his family because they had too many animals. His mom found the cat and told him that he could only keep it if he took care of it himself. (This shows that his mother is very firm but at the same time very sweet to let him keep it.) She ended up taking care of Daisy Mae, the cat that had been adopted by Sonny. Sonny’s relationship with the cat was good because when the house was at odds he confided with the cat with his worries.   Page 90-91: Sonny’s mom and friends were all ecstatic because of the rocket's successful launch. Sonny’s mom says “ I think that’s wonderful.” ‘Don’t you Homer?” He says ”wonderful” from a voice afar. This tells us that his mother is supportive while his father does not show much interest in the matter.

Page   Page 91: Homer show’s how much support he shows his son in his project. Sonny and his friends after the launch form their own rocket agency called the Big Creek Missile Agency (BCMA). They now had Quentin, the scientist, Sonny, the president, O’Dell, the treasurer ( in charge of supplies), Roy Lee, transportation, and Sherman, publicity and setting the rocket up.   Page 92: They decide their rocket range will be at an old slack dump up behind the mine. They decide to then start designing the rocket and sketching it out. Later in the page, Sonny discusses Quentin. He talks about the fact that Quentin always eats all of his food, therefore his mother decided to pack two sandwiches. This shows a growing relationship between the boys.   Page 93 & 94: Quentin and Sonny are looking through the trophy case at their school imagining what it would be like to win a trophy that big for one of their rockets. Then Buck and his football buddies come along and tries to start a fight, which is later broken up by Sonny’s older brother Jim. After this event the principal shows up and discusses that he does not approve of their rocket building. The woman next to him, Miss Riley, was in charge of the science fair and thought it was a great idea. His reasoning is that he heard what happen to his first rocket, showing that the town is so small that things can spread very quickly.

Page   Page 95-96: This continues on from the discussion between Miss Riley and Mr. Turner and the boys. She says that she graduated from this school, “and all she ever heard about was football, football, football. She discusses that other things in science can be important too. She later asks Sonny id he wants to try to win the county science fair. He says he doesn’t want to run because there is a school called Welch High School, and they were known for winning all of the awards every year because they were very well raised ad had a lot of money. He mentioned that they had students who went off to college and won awards.   Page 97-98: He met up with Emily Sue, one of Dorothy’s friends. He asked her why Dorothy doesn’t like like him, and she told him that everybody like you because you like yourself. She gives an example of his brother and mentioned that all the girls like him but he doesn’t really have any friends. She says that he is trying to find someone who like him for who he is, not because he is a huge football star. After that Quentin and Sonny talked about the rocket and decided that the reason that I didn’t work is because they needed some glue that would burn.

Page   Page 99: He had to go down to the company store to buy some of the combustile glue needed for their project. He encounters Junior and is very disturbed to hear about all of the racism around him, and he had never heard of a colored- only beach.   Page : They had figured that the black powder combination they had come up with had worked, so they were checking it for problems and realized that the nozzle of the rocket needed to be smaller. Sonny came up with the good idea of welding a washer to it to make a nozzle. Quentin decided that it was a good idea but realized they needed a welder. Sonny new of only one welder that they could get. His name was Mr. Isaac Bykovski, and him and his wife were good friends with Sonny’s family. That night Sonny snuck out to present the situation to Mr. Bykovski.   Page : He walked up to him and told him that he was building a rocket and needed a washer welded to the nozzle. Mr. Bykovski suggested to solder it instead of welding it. He then tells him how his mom is fine with him building rockets, but his dad doesn’t like the idea. He then helped Sonny and taught him how to do it.

Page:   Page : The next day he went quietly through the night to go pick up his rocket. When he saw the perfectly soldered rocket he was super exited to put “Auk I” on it. Auk was an extinct bird that could not fly. This name came to be because of Quentin. The rocket then fails and all of the boys are very disappointed. They realized it worked until the solder melted. Even though it had only flown six feet, they were still exited for the fact that it had even flown! Sonny, the next day took the rocket to Mr. Bykovski and they decided to weld it after all instead of the solder.   Page: : He tried his luck and got Mr. Bykovski to make him three more rockets( Auk II, Auk III, and Auk IV.) The second one unlike the first flew ten feet and then zipped and zapped in many directions in the air. The third same reaction, mad that it didn't fly, but it did fly was the whole point! The last one was fired and flew perfectly into the air until It slightly turned toward the mine.

Page   Page : The rocket was heading for the mine, the excitement soon turned to fear. On the quest to find the rocket they looked down at his dad’s office to soon realize that they had taken a chunk of brick out of his dad’s office wall. His dad came at him yelling that he could have killed somebody. ( This event proves to the father that he was right.)   Page 111: His dad felt very embarrassed in front of the other men and was very disappointed in Sonny. He then figured out the weld could not have done by Sonny and knew exactly who did it, Mr. Bykovski.
