Is Life Possible Without Fractions And Percentages? How Are They Related ? By: Nadeen Malik 8CC – Mathematics : Mr.Nabeel

Math is everywhere and yet, we may not recognize it because it doesn't look like the math we did in school. Percentages are used in our everyday life and we may not even realize it !!

How are Percentages Used in Our Everyday Lives ? There are many ways that we used percentages in our lives, next time you go shopping check out the sale signs like 30% off or 75% off! Knowing how to calculate percentages can help you determine the prices of your items during sale. This is a very common use of percentages in our daily lives.

How are Percentages Used in Our Everyday Lives ? (2) Look at labels on juice boxes and milk and see where it says “Percentage of Recommended Daily Intake” for the portion or serving size. If you can calculate percentages you can determine how much of the food you need to eat or drink in order to get the full, or 100%, recommended daily intake.

Fractions are continuously used in people’s professional careers, jobs and even in everyday life. We usually don’t give much thought into it, but we are using fractions unconsciously as we go through our daily routine.

How are Fractions Used in Our Daily Lives? One of the most basic uses of fractions is for cooking. Depending on the recipe, we are usually required to measure. For example, you are making lasagna and the recipe that you are looking for would only serve up to 4 people but you are cooking for 8. You need to double the recipe so that you will be able to make up to 8 servings. If the recipe calls for 1 /2 cup of chopped onions, you need to double this amount. So, for 8 serving you would put in a WHOLE cup of chopped onions.

How are Fractions Used in Our Daily Lives? (2) Fractions are also used when you are telling the time, for example when you look at a clock we know that quarter past (1/4), half past (1/2) and quarter till are fractions. In fact, all time telling is a fraction of x/60. For example, 36 minutes past the hour is 3/5’s or 36/60

How Are They Related? Both fractions and percentages represent parts of whole numbers. Where a fraction is a part of the amount of the denominator, a percent is always some part of 100. The word "percent" comes from Latin and means, "part of one hundred”. To express 50% as a fraction, think of it this way, it is fifty parts out of one hundred or 50/100.You can reduce this fraction by : 50÷50= 1 and 100÷50= 2 so the fraction would be 1/2.
