Phrase or Clause? Phrase= group of words that adds meaning to a sentence but does not contain a subject and verb (functions as a noun, adjective, or adverb). Clause= contains both a subject and verb but cannot stand alone (subordinate clause).

Adjective Clause An adjective clause is a subordinate clause that modifies a noun or pronoun. Usually follows the word or words it modifies. Usually introduced by a relative pronouns –That –Which –Who –Whom –Whose Adjective: the blue flower Adjective phrase: the flower with blue petals Adjective clause: The flower that has blue petals.

Adverb Clause An adverb clause is a subordinate clause that modifies a verb, adjective, or adverb. Can be placed anywhere in the sentence. Adverb: Bravely, Jason battled a fierce dragon. Adverb phrase: With great bravery, Jason battled the fierce dragon. Adverb Clause: Because Jason was brave, he battled a fierce dragon.
