Use Subordinate Clauses for This Thesis AND for the Topic Sentences Because Since Although If When Whenever Even though

Thesis=Your ONE SENTENCE ANSWER to the prompt Thesis=Your ONE SENTENCE ANSWER to the prompt. The thesis will determine what you will point out that is DIFFERENT and what is the SAME. PROMPT: Choose two settings from The Great Gatsby. Write an essay explaining how those two places differ, what each place represents, and how their contrast contributes to a Modern American literature theme in the novel. You must uncover the purpose of the settings as they relate to the theme. Although both {setting 1} and {setting 2} represent _______________________________, {setting 1} __________________________________ while {setting 2} _______________________________________.

Prompt Writers often highlight the values of a culture or a society by using characters who are alienated from that culture or society because of gender, race, class, or creed. Choose a character from The Great Gatsby and compare and contrast that character's alienation with either Gatsby or Nick’s alienation. What do these characters’ alienations reveal about the surrounding society's assumptions or moral values? Because both Gatsby and {character 2} ____________________, they are alienated from __________________, which reveals that society _________________________________; however, ____________________________________.

Topic Sentences The content of the topic sentences are going to depend on which format you choose If you choose the 4-paragraph format, you will need to include the subject and ALL three elements you will discuss. If you choose the 5-paragraph format, you will need to include BOTH subjects, and the ONE element you will discuss.

Sample Thesis Comparing Cinderella to Arial (Little Mermaid) First, I’m going to look at the elements chart and decide which elements I’m going to use to compare/contrast the two. Second, I’m going to decide which elements show a similarity and which show a difference. Ambitions/goals (Similar) Where they come from (Different) Values (Similar)

Sample Thesis Because I have one difference and two similarities, I need to write a complex sentence: subordinate clause with an insubordinate clause. Although Cinderella is a human character who lives on land and Arial is a mermaid who lives in the sea, both young women value love most of all and go to desperate measures to obtain it.

4-paragraph topic sentences Although Cinderella is a human character who lives on land and Arial is a mermaid who lives in the sea, both young women value love most of all and go to desperate measures to obtain it. TS #1: Cinderella grew up in the safety and comfort of her father’s beautiful home, but when her evil step-mother takes over the household, Cinderella’s quest for love becomes all the more powerful. TS #2: Arial, on the other hand, lives a comfortable life with her father under the sea, but is dissatisfied with her limited choices, and like Cinderella, she seeks love above all else putting herself in danger during the quest.

5-paragraph topic sentences Cinderella’s comfortable life at home is shattered when her father dies and her step-mother takes over; however, Arial’s life is rather comfortable and predictable in her father’s castle. Both Cinderella and Arial, therefore, seek out love in hopes that it will rescue them from their situations. Moreover, Cinderella and Arial both put themselves in dangerous situations in order to obtain the love they so desperately seek.
