Lorenzo De Zavala’s pivotal role in Texas’ battle for independence against Mexico during the Cry of Dolores, caused him to be imprisoned for his outspoken support of democratic reform against Mexico.

Lorenzo De Zavala was one of nine children. When he grew up, he married Teresa Correa and had three children. When she died, he remarried a woman named Emily West at which he had three children from her.

Lorenzo De Zavala spoke many more languages other than Spanish and English. These languages consists of: French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Greek, Latin, and other languages.

The "Old Alcalde," Governor Oran M. Roberts, often referred to De Zavala as the most farsighted and greatest constructive statesman of his age. Among the many incidents of his life, showing self-forgetfulness, is one which does him much honor.

Later on in his life Zavala wrote a book titled Journey to the United States of North America. Zavala's book, written in Spanish, was published in France in 1831, but no English translation was published until It was reprinted in 2005 in paperback as Journey to the United States of North America.
