Act Four Scene One  The three witches are creating a potion and spell around a cauldron  “Double Double toil and trouble—witches say this as they work to create an evil spell  Hecate enters and praises the witches for creating the spell  Macbeth enters—asks them what his future holds  FIRST APPARITION (like a ghost) ARMED HEAD (knight’s helmet): BEWARE MACDUFF  SECOND APPARITION A bloody child: NONE OF WOMAN BORN SHALL HARM MACBETH

THIRD APPARITION  CHILD CROWNED HOLDING A TREE BRANCH: MACBETH shall never vanquish’d be until Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane Hill Shall come against him (he won’t be conquered until the forest moves up the hill)  Macbeth asks if Banquo’s children will be kings 8 kings appear with Banquo’s ghost following The last king has a glass in his hand  Witches dance and vanish—Lennox enters and tells Macbeth that Macduff has fled to England.  Macbeth is going to murder everyone in in Macduff’s castle.

Act 4 Scene 2 Fife—Macduff’s castle Lady Macduff complains about Macduff leaving to England Her son suggests that they will be fine without Macduff Messenger enters warning Lady Macduff of danger Lady Macduff recognizes that she has no defense against violence Son is murdered and Lady Macduff flees pursued by the murderers

Act Four scene three ENGLAND—the only scene in the play that takes place outside of Scotland England represents light and good in contrast to the unnatural acts and evil taking place in Scotland Conversation between Macduff and Malcolm Talk about Macbeth’s evil acts—when Macduff says that Malcolm should go back to Scotland in order to claim his rightful throne, Malcolm brings up his own flaws (he’s a sex fiend) Macduff assures Malcolm that he would be the better king England is setting forth to overthrow Macbeth (Siward)

Macduff and Malcolm are met by Ross Ross tells Macduff that Macbeth has murdered Macduff’s family Macduff goes into a frenzy of upset Malcolm tells Macduff to “dispute it like a man” line 218 Macduff commits to overthrowing Macbeth as well England is dedicated to overcoming the evil in Scotland.
