 Children and adolescents should have 60 minutes (1 hour) or more of physical activity daily. › Aerobic: Most of the 60 or more minutes a day should be either moderate- or vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity and should include vigorous- intensity physical activity at least 3 days a week. › Muscle-strengthening: As part of their 60 or more minutes of daily physical activity, children and adolescents should include muscle-strengthening physical activity on at least 3 days of the week. › Bone-strengthening: As part of their 60 or more minutes of daily physical activity, children and adolescents should include bone-strengthening physical activity on at least 3 days of the week.  Source: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Proposal: Add a new section that recognizes Girls’ G.R.A.S.P as a “positive development opportunity program for children and youth that is an essential investment in the future well- being of our State.” 16

Girls’ GRASP Center for Excellence pilot program From appropriations made for purposes of this Section, the Department of Human Services (DHS) shall implement and administer a Girls’ GRASP Center for Excellence pilot program for the study and evaluation of adolescent African American girls in Chicago. The program shall be operated over a period of 3 years. DHS is authorized to make grants to school districts and other programs that apply to participate in the Girls GRASP Center for Excellence program as implemented and administered by DHS. The DHS shall by rule provide the form of application and criteria to be used and applied in selecting participating school districts, recreational facilities and other programs. 17
