Appendix 9 NIPEC Children’s Nursing Network Workshop Mary McKenna WHSCT Presentation Friday 15 February 2013

Looking to the Future Health & Well-Being of Our Children Priority areas being targeted span across Maternity and Public Health. These also interface with Paediatrics e.g.  Tackling obesity  Healthy Child Healthy Future  Infant Mental Health  Emotional Well Being Strategy for Children

Recent Experiences in Paediatrics That May Influence Future Training Needs  Journey to date in getting children with complex physical health care needs discharged and managed in the community setting  Ventilated teenagers now getting prepared to transition to adult services  Awareness of Hyponatraemia Risk in Children  Earlier discharge of Neonates into the community

Other Factors in Paediatrics That May Influence Future Training Needs  Difficulty in getting full allocation of doctors in training posts – Gaps in Rota  ‘Overdue But Welcome’ Paediatric Strategy  Extended Role of the Registered Nurse  Extended Role of the Health Care Assistant  Transforming Your Care (TYC)

ChangesShort Term Changes 0 – 2 years Medium Term Changes 2 years + Acute Paediatrics What will change? -Development of Short Stay Assessment Unit. Less inpatient beds -Continuation of transferring out critically ill children and managing High Dependency locally. - Age of children admitted to Acute wards will increase from 14 years to 16 years (possibly 18 years). New challenge will be Adolescent Mental Health. Who is affected? -Ward based staff Learning Needs -Development of APNP to work in SSAU -Caring for the High Dependency at DGH - CPAP Training - APLS / PILS - Child & Adolescent Mental Health Interventions

Service AreaChangesShort Term Changes 0 – 2 years Medium Term Changes 2 years + Community Paediatrics What will change? -Moving to 7 day service -More General Paediatrics on case loads as well as Palliative Care -Supporting Specialist Nurses in managing long term conditions e.g. Diabetes - ? Home oxygen treatment for babies with bronchiolitis Who is affected? -CCN teams Learning Needs -Updates and up skilling in Acute General Paediatrics -New insulin treatments and regimes

Service AreaChangesShort Term Changes 0 – 2 years Medium Term Changes 2 years + NeonatalWhat will change? - On going treatments which are evidence based such as - cooling treatment - nitrate treatment - Ongoing developments / research will inform changes in treatments Who is affected? - Neonatal workforce (registered and unregistered) Learning Needs -Specific training as new treatments are introduced

Other Considerations for the Future  HCA’s – Training to be accredited  ? Emergency Department / Theatres require alternative to RN (Child) qualification for their staff  Developing more nursing roles to support keeping children with long term conditions out of hospital
