MONITOR’S RESPONSIBILITIES & PROCEDURES SCTX WOODWORKERS CLUB Updated May 2009

MAY MEMBERSHIP RESPONSIBILITY Each member that uses the woodshop more than twice a year should monitor at least once. Members that use the woodshop more frequently should monitor more often. All members are expected to be familiar with the Monitor’s Responsibilities and authority.

MAY MONITOR’S OBJECTIVE Safety is primary responsibility. Stay alert to active work on high risk machines  Table Saws  Jointer  Planer  Router  Shaper  Radial arm saw  Miter saw Do not read or work on your own project or shop project or on equipment repair.

MAY Wear orange apron. Everyone must sign-in by scanning their CA identification badge; everyone in shop must wear name tag. Conduct shop tours for visitors unless very busy, then find someone else to lead tour. No open-toed shoes in shop. Loose fitting work gloves are not allowed when operating machinery; however tight fitting (golf, batting, woodworking) gloves may be worn at the user’s discretion. MONITOR’S DUTIES

MAY Guards should always be on table saws.  Members may remove at own risk, but must put guard back before leaving table. MONITOR’S DUTIES

MAY MONITOR’S DUTIES (cont) Dust collection should be running whenever any one is using equipment that is attached to it. Each worker should be reminded to clean up after they finish their work. Any problem with machines, tools, supplies, etc. should be noted on the first sheet in the monitor’s book. Money handling  Any incoming money should be noted on envelope, money inserted in envelope, sealed, and deposited in Treasurer’s box.

MAY MONITOR’S DUTIES (cont) Assist prospective new members with the sign up process  Prior to putting their name on the next Safety Orientation Class list, they must: Fill out an envelope with all information complete Insert $60* in the envelope (check preferred) to cover the class fee ($20) plus annual dues ($40*). Fee is NON-REFUNDABLE. See the sign up sheet for full details.  The first 10 people to sign up and pay will take the class. Others should put their names on the wait list which will roll to the next month. *New members dues as follows: DuesFeeTotal Nov – Mar$40$20$60 Apr – Jun$30$20$50 Jul – Sep$20$20$40 Oct$10$20$30

MAY RED PANIC BUTTON Located on wall at Monitor’s desk. Trips the two main breakers to all primary machines. Lights and dust collection system not affected.

MAY RED PANIC BUTTON To restart, pull out red panic button Make sure all operating equipment is turned off. two main circuit breakers on wall at monitor’s desk must be reset. All should stand clear of machines for reset.

MAY SAFETY AIDS First aid kit is located on wall next to Women’s bathroom. Review contents.

MAY WEST WALL SAFETY AIDS Locate fire alarm & 4 fire extinguishers and how to use them! FRONT DOOR BACK DOOR FIRE ALARM WALL

MAY EMERGENCY PROCEDURE 1. Call 911 for serious injury.  Provide operator with Your name Woodshop phone number – Woodshop address – 1303 Sun City Blvd Description of injury and severity Name of injured person Stay on line until operator tells you to hang up 2. Assist the injured person and solicit help from other Woodworkers to aid and clean up.

MAY EMERGENCY PROCEDURE 3.Call Community Association office Complete CA accident form – blanks are stored in file cabinet under desk. 5.Notify a Club Officer (phone list on wall). 6.Enter details in Safety Record log located in Monitor’s desk.

MAY “DO’S” Do stop material coming into the shop that could be dangerous to people or equipment -  Old wood that might have hidden metal (nails, screws), embedded stones, or concrete coating. Do make sure hardened glue is scraped from jointed surfaces before running through sanders.

MAY “DON’TS” Don’t allow following materials in the Woodshop for any type of work – cutting, drilling, sanding, sharpening, etc.  Treated lumber  Used lumber  PVC  Glass or glass blocks  Cement boards (Hardiplank® type material)  Metal of any kind

MAY MORE “DON’TS” Don’t allow sanding on fresh glue-ups. Don’t allow pine or any other wood that is damp or wet in wide belt sander or 12” belt sander. Don’t allow painted lumber through the power sanders.

MAY OPENING A key holder will unlock shop by 8:30. Be on time – shop opens at 8:30 AM. Turn on lights. Sign-in as Monitor. Wear orange Monitor apron.

MAY OPENING (& during the day) Make sure guards are on table saws.

MAY OPENING (cont) To turn on the compressor, make sure the power switch on the small breaker box closest to the compressor shed is in the “ON” position. Do not change These switches

MAY OPENING (cont) Turn on dust collection system when anyone starts using equipment attached to the collector.

MAY OPENING (cont) Make coffee. TUESDAY & FRIDAY MORNING –all four dust barrels are to be EMPTIED into the dumpster in back of shop before shop opens. The Monitor should seek assistance.

MAY MID DAY The morning monitor should shut down the dust collector around noon – let it stay off for a few minutes – until the “shaking” has stopped. Restart as soon as anyone begins using equipment attached to the collector system.

MAY CLOSING Work stops and clean up starts at 4 PM – no earlier – unless a class is scheduled. Turn off coffee maker. Dump coffee in sink and rinse pot. Dump coffee grounds in trash container. Make sure all equipment is turned off. Return all hand tools (except hand sanders) to tool rack. Brush or vacuum all machines, benches, counters, and equipment. Keep dust collection system running during clean up. Do not blow off equipment. Sweep floor.

MAY Empty all floor vacuums if needed. Dump trash barrels in dumpster behind shop. Turn off dust collection system when clean up completed. CLOSING (cont)

MAY CLOSING (cont) To turn OFF the compressor, make sure the power switch on the small breaker box closest to the compressor shed is in the “OFF” position. Do not change These switches

MAY Remove orange monitor’s apron and place in drawer. Make sure back door is closed and locked. Turn off lights – switches by drill presses & back door. One bank of lights will stay on. CLOSING (cont)

MAY CLOSING (cont) Release the push bar on both front doors with hex key (hanging on wall to left of door). The doors will automatically lock when closed. Move “Open/Closed” sign to “Closed”
