Miss Quinn’s Owl Hoots September 11,2015 Contact Info: (personal number) Cowan website: cowan.k12.in.us Next week’s Poem of the Week: Ten Apples Congratulations to: Delaney, Reagan, Cayden, Jaxon, Jay, Kynlee, Abel, Keira, Rayne, Camdon, Dalton, Aubrey, Kallie, William, Dominic, and Aidan for memorizing this week’s poem of the week! Word of the week: Purple Thursday, October 1 – Skating Party Friday, October 2 – Field trip to Fire Station October 8 th -9 th – Fall Conferences October 9 – No School for Children October th – Fall Break! Remember to check out the website each week! As we move from play based learning, to more academic instruction, more resources for you will be added to the website. Also, as extra incentive to check the website, there is a different secret word from the newsletter secret word. This gives your child an extra chance to earn a golden strip! There are still a few children that a returning empty reading logs to school. Please make reading a priority with your child! Beginning next month, they will start bringing home books that are on their reading level, and that they can read to you. Some children really enjoy looking at the nonfiction books. These books can be quite lengthy. Please do not read the whole book, but instead, look at the pictures, and choose a few pages to read. This week in math, we started working on numbers 1-5. Please be practicing this skill with your child at home as well. Being able to write both numbers and letters is a very important skill that needs to be learned as soon as possible! Several friends have been out sick this week. Please remind your children to wash their hands and use hand sanitizer! Things to work on at home: Writing/recognizing our name. Writing/recognizing all numbers and letters. Not calling out for your attention. Color words One to one correspondence (tracking the words with their finger) as stories are being read. Point to the words as you are reading their bedtime stories to help get them in the practice of doing this themselves. This week we continued working on main idea and details using our reading series. We also talked about safety, rules, and manners, and why all of these things are very important. In math, we worked on graphing. Next week in math, we will be talking about ordinal numbers, as well as ordering numbers 1-5. In reading, we will be starting the next 3 week unit in our reading series: characterization. We will also be starting a 2 week unit on Apples as well. Apples is one of our favorite themes that we cover in the fall. We will be doing two different cooking projects with apples as well! Many students are still struggling with writing letters. Please be practicing letter writing at home! If you would like handwriting practice sheets or number practice sheets to use at home with your child, please let me know. I am happy to supply these. This week’s secret word is: apples. This week we began reading groups. There are currently 4 reading groups grouped by ability. These groups will be ever changing as students grasp the different skills we are working on. Next week in reading groups, we will continue working on title page, what a letter, word, and sentence are, tracking with our finger as we read, and looking for picture clues. When students can tell me all of the days of the week in order, they have the opportunity to earn a golden strip. At home, talk about what day of the week it is, what yesterday was, and what tomorrow will be. We practice this every day during our calendar time, but this can be a difficult skill for some children. Students can also earn a golden strip when they can tell me all 12 months in order. Have a great weekend!
