Graphing Pictographs and Bar Graphs First Grade Stephanie Turnbow, Tipton County Schools

What is a Pictograph? Uses pictures to show how many of each category. Pictures can equal more than one. This pictograph uses apples to show how many apples were sold each month.

Parts of a Pictograph Title Categories Key Data

How Do We Read a Pictograph? First: Read the Title….What is the graph about? Second: Check the Key….How many will each picture represent? If there is no key, count by 1’s. Finally: Count the Data….Use skip counting for graphs that don’t count by ones.

Let’s Try One Together! What is the title of this graph? How many does each apple represent? How many Red Delicious were in the store? How many Jonathan apples were in the store?

One More… What is the title of this graph? How many tornadoes does each picture represent? How many tornadoes were there in Red River County? How many tornadoes were there in in Cass County?

What is a Bar Graph? Shows how many in each category with bars instead of pictures. Numbers on the side will show you how to count. The bars can be horizontal or vertical.

Parts of a Bar Graph Graph Title Label How Many? Bars Label What kind? Label What?

How Do We Read a Bar Graph? Very similar to a pictograph! First: Read the Title…What is the graph about? Second: Read the Labels….How will we count? What are we counting? Remember: Not all bar graphs count by ones!! Check the numbers on the side!

Let’s Try One Together! What is the title of the graph? How do the children get to school? How many children ride their bicycles to school?

One More… What is the title of this graph? How are we counting? How many more students like red than orange? How many students like green best? What color got the fewest votes?
