Changing the Cultural Norm Smokefree Play Parks and Beyond

Smokefree Smokefree Legislation tackled smoking indoors in public places Smokefree Homes – now an established concept Smokefree Homes Campaign ran three times across the South West

Smokefree PHE now running above the line campaign including smokefree cars Expanding Smokefree environments is not just about Smokefree – also about denormalisation of tobacco use A cleaner and fresher environment for our children

Children, not adults start smoking 65% of smokers started before the age of 18

Smokefree Play Parks Appetite for a voluntary ban on smoking in Play Parks South Gloucestershire had already done this North Somerset piloted Smokefree beaches Undertook research into people’s attitudes 98% said they would support a voluntary ban on smoking

Testing the message MESSAGE:  The sign needs to overtly communicate that the park is smoke free  Highlighting the voluntary nature will encourage heavier smokers to comply TONE:  Avoid dictating to smokers – they resent being told what to do, just as much as they don’t want to be patronised DESIGN:  A reference to children (e.g. via imagery) shows that they are the focal point  Colours and an image are crucial in order to engage visually PLACEMENT:  All want to see the sign placed at the entrance to the park (e.g. on gates) but also elsewhere in the park as prompts The need to be ‘asked’ and ‘thanked’ was key

Next steps in Play Parks Rolled out in a key park initially Plan to run post implementation evaluation Appetite is such that the roll out is continuing before this is done Play parks and beaches Toolkit compiled and artwork available to buy Move of Public Health to Local Authorities enabling more rapid joined up working
