BLANK VERSE & FREE VERSE

BLANK VERSE Unrhymed lines of iambic pentameter Shakespearian plays It is the east, and Juliet is the sun! Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon, Who is already sick and pale with grief, That thou her maid art far more fair than she: Be not her maid, since she is envious; Her vestal livery is but sick and green, And none but fools do wear it; cast it off. Paradise Lost by John Milton That space the evil one abstracted stood From his own evil, and for the time remain'd Stupidly good, of enmity disarm'd, Of guile, of hate, of envy, of revenge.

FREE VERSE Relatively recent invention Major form of contemporary poetry Good free verse always matches its rhythms to the emotional content of the utterance. Lines are different widths No regular rhyme scheme Utilized by Walt Whitman, Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot, Elizabeth Bishop etc. The unit of free verse seems to be the breath. There is a breath limit to the long lines of free verse. Elements of chance, resembles an aleatory universe where the casual rather than fated is in charge.

THE LOVE SONG OF J. ALFRED PRUFROCK BUT pay close attention, behind many free verse poems “lurks the shadow of counted verse.” Where do you see the “shadows of counted verse” seeping in?
