Today Challenges and opportunities - What are the challenges and opportunities Report on paper topic - What is the topic? - Why selected; why is it important?

CHALLENGES OF FAIR TRADE 1. Pursuit of large-volume markets and business partnerships involving large-scale traders, distributors, supermarkets and retailers. Will working within conventional markets erode the movement’s mission of challenging the unjust and inequitable nature of conventional trade? Will capturing market share overshadow the moral purpose of Fair Trade? Are alternative and traditional market strategies of Fair Trade in opposition to each other?

CHALLENGES OF FAIR TRADE 2. The integration of large-scale estates or plantations into certified Fair Trade production Can the movement maintain and advance Fair Trade principles working with large-scale plantations as well as small-scale producers? Can large number of workers, as well as, producers receive benefits individually and collectively? Will sourcing Fair Trade commodities from larger enterprises put small scale producers out of business

CHALLENGES OF FAIR TRADE 3. Changing nature of the Fair Trade movement Will Fair Trade be able to maintain its traditional principles as it becomes engaged with other social movements seeking to advance the interests of disadvantaged populations? Can Fair Trade be adapted to different national conditions and to be developed in the global North? Can FLO adapt to increasing diverse interests of Fair Trade, or, will narrow sets of interests dominate?

CHALLENGES OF FAIR TRADE 4. Shifting consumer base of the Fair Trade movement Can Fair Trade maintain and communicate its unique message in the face of the growing number of corporate and NGO standards and certifications? Can Fair Trade be successful in mainstream as well as dedicated markets? Will Fair Trade maintain its place as part of a movement for an alternative vision of trade, development and globalization; or, will it be reduced to another set of standards?
