Department of Health West Midlands (1) DH representatives in the West Midlands; Co-located with Government Office for the West Midlands; Work in partnership with other government teams in the region, the Strategic Health Authority, NHS, local authorities and regional agencies to reduce health inequalities and improve the health and well-being of the region; Lead on health and social care aspects of Local Area Agreements.

Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) - Children and Learners Group Face of DCSF in the region; Provide strategic leadership for improving outcomes for children and young people (“Every Child Matters”); Support and challenge LAs to enable strategic change and improved partnership working; Work closely with key children's services improvement partners, including DHWM, Strategic Health Authority, the Care Services Improvement Partnership, the Training and Development Agency, Ofsted, Youth Parliament etc.

Children and Learners Child obesity a priority for the DCL: –Priorities conversations; –Children and Young People’s Plans; –LAAs; –Joint Improvement Support Plans; –Regional Improvement and Efficiency Partnership.

Summary Obesity is not just a health issue; The consequences of obesity burdens society as a whole; It must be tackled through drivers, levers and major key players outside the NHS; Need broad approaches undertaken in a range of settings by co- ordinated action in partnership; Tackling obesity is a complex long term goal; This conference reinforces the challenges as well as illustrating progress to date in the region; The event is not an end in itself but an impetus for further collaborative action.
