Dallas D. Rhodes Department of Geology and Geography Georgia Southern University Statesboro, Georgia DEMOGRAPHY OF GEOLOGISTS AND GEOLOGY PROGRAMS IN THE SOUTHEASTERN SECTION OF THE GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA

Rocky Mountain North Central Southeast Northeast South Central Cordilleran Population Structures of GSA Sections

67.8% born before % born before % born before 1965

Is the Southeast Different? Overall population structure of the Southeast Section is similar to GSA as a whole. GSA membership growing rapidly among women in the last 20 years while the number of male members has declined in each cohort. Largest total population of all sections is in the Southeast. Smallest number of geoscience degree programs per million population is in the Southeast.

Why is the Southeast Different? Variety of geology? Vegetation cover (lack of exposure)? No strong mineral or petroleum resource base? Number of “old” colleges and universities? Large minority population? Rapid population growth? Resources for higher education?
