Basketball Higher P.E. Structures & Strategies

Learning Objectives During the course of this lesson you will learn about: Some strengths and weaknesses to a fast break A development programme for fast break

Analysing Performance To analyse performance, we use the same methods of analysis as Prep of the body and skills and techniques. Video performance and then analyse using a games observation schedule This will detail areas of weaknesses and strengths. This allows us to pinpoint what part of the fast break is the weakness. In this case, the lay up and drive to the basket is the main weakness in our performance. Therefore the analysis will then take the form of a skills and techniques development programme

Fast Break: Strengths Centres: Receive rebound and looks to see if pass up court is on or pivot to make outlet pass on ball side of key. Centres: Centres then becomes trailing players to provide depth and cover in case fast break is ineffective. Forwards: Both forwards should break out to wide areas of court and cut across court staying in front of the ball. Point Guard: Point guard positions at side of key and shouts ‘ball’ when centre catches rebound. Point guard should then look up court for forward pass. If pass is not on, Guard should dribble hard down middle of court, allowing wing players to get in front of ball to give passing options. Guard should dribble to drive for lay up or stop at foul line and consider shooting or passing options

Fast Break: Weaknesses When discussing a weakness in performance, it is important that we are aware of what we said our strengths are. Forwards: Forwards are ineffective at driving to basket at speed and performing a successful lay-up. It is also worth saying that the forwards’ shooting ability is reasonably poor. This would lead to an ineffective fast break as the outcome would not be successful. Therefore it is vital that there is a programme of work that is designed to develop the weaknesses in performance. Practices should begin relatively easy and progress into more game- like situations.

Development programme Stage One: Forwards should begin with very simple lay up drill to familiarise with sub-routines involved. Forwards performing lay up in isolation x x

Development programme Stage two: V lay up drill. XXXX player drives to basket and performs lay up player follows team mate and rebounds ball

Development programme Stage three – 4 man fast break unopposed Forwards break wide and fill the lanes x x x x x x Forwards cut and drive to basket Centre rebounds and passes to guard and follows down court Guard dribbles down court and passes to forward

Development programme Stage four – 4 man fast break with opponent (more game like) Forwards break wide and fill the lanes x x x x x x Forwards cut and drive to basket Centre rebounds and passes to guard and follows down court Guard dribbles down court and passes to forward that Y does not mark Y
