CEOS/WGISS # 20 、 SG#19, Kiev – Sep 12-16, Purpose: Provide data for water cycle research. 1.Gather Data (and make it available to users) 2.Provide Data Integration The purpose of the WTF-CEOP is to provide assistance to the CEOP science community in the development of data services associated with CEOP data integration. - CEOP - Consolidated Enhanced Observation Period

CEOS/WGISS # 20 、 SG#19, Kiev – Sep 12-16, Gather Data Provide data for water cycle research: 1.In-situ data (35 Reference Sites globally) 2.Satellite Data (200 TBytes, subset and full scene) 3.MOLTS and Model Output Data (NWP from 10 Agencies) Four data gathering periods: EOP-1: 1 July 2001 thru 30 September 2001 EOP-2: 1 October 2001 thru 30 September 2002 EOP-3: 1 October 2002 thru 30 September 2003 EOP-4: 1 October 2003 thru 31 December 2004

CEOS/WGISS # 20 、 SG#19, Kiev – Sep 12-16, Gather Data (In-situ Reference Sites) All in-situ data-sets are gathered and Archived at UCAR.

CEOS/WGISS # 20 、 SG#19, Kiev – Sep 12-16, JAXA is supporting subset and delivery of the following data sets: –TRMM/PR, TMI –Aqua/AMSR-E –ADEOS-II/GLI, AMSR –DMSP13-15/SSMI Dr. Shibasaki of Tokyo Univ. is coordinating with the CEOP science team and data providers (JAXA and other) to comply with the ISO/TC /1&2 metadata standards. NASA is now planning to subset and deliver the following data sets: –MODIS, AIRS, etc. The CEOP team has already discussed data delivery with Dr. Achache of ESA and he has agreed to provide ENVISAT data. The CEOP team is expecting active support from WGISS. Gather Data (Satellite)

CEOS/WGISS # 20 、 SG#19, Kiev – Sep 12-16, Gather Data (MOLTS and Model Output Data) NWP – Numerical Weather Prediction data Major National and Multi-National Centers BoM, CPTEC, ECMWF, ECPC, JMA, DAO, GLDAS, NCEP, NCMRWF, UKMO Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPIM) at Hamburg, Germany All data-sets are being gathered and archived at the MPIM

CEOS/WGISS # 20 、 SG#19, Kiev – Sep 12-16, Data Integration Data location  Standalone physical location  Distributed sites reference by links Data types  Model output data  Insitu data  Satellite data Data sources Services  Metadata keyword search  Data value search  File format translation  Reprojection  Regridding  Data Interpolation Integrated datasets Multiple files from individual member datasets Spatial Temporal rectification Spatial rectification Intercomparison Of Integrated Datasets

CEOS/WGISS # 20 、 SG#19, Kiev – Sep 12-16, CEOP Data Integration Two Important Steps to meet the science requirements and to develop the prototype!! Satisfy science requests rapidly (evaluate what scientists want and do quick development using WGISS/existing technologies/tools)  Phase 1 –Single user interface (menus for all data types) –Spatial Integration (in-situ, satellite, model) –Temporal Integration (in-situ, satellite, model) –Delivery of exact pixels required (validation) –Scientist’s requests Consider how above results could be provided as standard user services:  Phase 2 –Standard data integration (standard service guidelines?) –ISO/TC211, OGC, GRID collaboration and implementation

CEOS/WGISS # 20 、 SG#19, Kiev – Sep 12-16, Updates since last WGISS Project Plan: Phase II strategic plan was added Implementation Plan: No change (will update End of 2005) Task Team Template (Profile): Reviewed with no change CEOP related telecons and meetings –CEOP International teleconference: monthly –CEOP model data telecon : monthly –WTF-CEOP telecon (NASA-JAXA) : twice from last WGISS –CEOP Phase II budget kick-off in Japan: August 10 th WTF-CoreSite interaction –Action19-30: WTF CEOP to connect to the WTF Core Test Sites telecon to discuss adding a CEOP Site.) –Participated in two CoreSite telecons and reported WTF-CEOP status. –CoreSite members are interested in Asian Sites and recommend to start to share satellite data at some sample sites. JAXA ptototype was announced to be open to CEOP scientists on June 1st. – NASA team support of Satellite data server: Still waiting to approve budget

CEOS/WGISS # 20 、 SG#19, Kiev – Sep 12-16, Way Forward Gather Data –Prof. Koike is now requesting data. WGISS may need to give more support. Data Integration –Periodically Update PP by JAXA –Accomplish the phase I prototype by JAXA – access CEOP In-situ, MOLTS, Satellite, M.O. Data online –Phase II system study –Any agency can write an IP at any time. –Monthly telecons –Maintain WTF-CEOP website. CEOS/WGISS # 20 、 SG#19, Kiev – Sep 12-16, Phase 2 Plan (1/3) CEOP Phase 2 concept CEOP has entered a newly defined phase 2 for further development. Phase 1 (through 2004) had an emphasis on observation and data development (collecting, archiving and preliminary analysis of CEOP data). Phase 2 will have an emphasis on research and system expansion to meet commitments to the CEOS/IGOS-P Water Theme, WCRP/COPES and to the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS). CEOP Phase-II will have 2 parts: Part-I ( ) apply CEOP Phase-I datasets to accomplish the CEOP Phase-I research analysis goals, and build the framework for a water cycle observation and data system. Part-II ( ) implementation of the water cycle observation and data system defined in Part-I, and advance research in several areas defined in the CEOP project (e.g. climate modeling, monsoon studies, cold climates, extreme weather events and aerosols).

CEOS/WGISS # 20 、 SG#19, Kiev – Sep 12-16, Phase 2 Plan (2/3) WTF-CEOP Phase 2 overview  will update/include PP CEOP Phase 1 (IP #1) : The basic WTF-CEOP system is being developed to provide access to the CEOP In-situ, MOLTS, Satellite and Model Output data. CEOP Phase 2 (IP will be developed by the end of 2005): Additional capability is being investigated through an R&D investigation and prototyping plan for 4 major elements. The main focus of this investigation and prototyping is to provide additional data discovery, search and access capability, perhaps including WGISS member software or systems such as GCMD, ECHO and other access tools (OGC/GALEON, SpaceTimeToolkit, NWGISS, etc). Schedule: This investigation and prototyping activity is scheduled to proceed for 3 years, beginning in July 2005 and ending in March 2008.
