Goal Setting

Definition Goals are what you are trying to achieve or the aims you are trying to reach. Goals may have many different purposes –Financial –Occupational –Personal –Relational –Educational

Window pane Create a window pane with 5 panes that describes/illustrates the difference between these types of goals: – Financial –Occupational –Personal –Relational –Educational

Goals Goals are a roadmap to what you wish to accomplish You must define what you want out of life, set a purpose Your goals are based on your values. –If you value good health, you may make eating better a goal

Values Values are the beliefs, feelings, and experiences that you consider important Values help you determine what is right and wrong They also help you determine what is important and what is not. What you decide to do with the rest of your life will be determined by your values

Forming Values Values are always LEARNED You learned your first values at home –Ex. If your family always celebrates holidays together, family togetherness may be a value you have

Forming Values Cont’d You will also learn values as you get older from your friends Some values may be similar and some may be different- neither is right or wrong per se, but different –Ex. You may prefer to go to the movies and your friend may prefer not to spend the money, and to rent movies only

Forming Values Cont’d Your community will help you form some of your values –Ex. Communities who do a lot of service work may instill a value of caring for others What you read in the newspaper, see on television, or hear on the radio influences your values

Forming Values Cont’d Your experiences may also affect your values Some personal experiences strengthen your values, while others may not –Ex. If you were injured as a child, safety might be an important value to you –YOUR EXPERIENCES WITHIN YOUR FAMILY GREATLY AFFECT YOUR VALUES

Values If you value monetary gains, your goals may include a financial realm –You may aspire to have a high paying job –If your goals are relationally based, you may set a goal to get married one day and have a family

Individual Goals Right now, get out a piece of paper and write down a goal for each of these areas: –Financial goals –Educational goals –Occupational goals –Personal goals –Relational goals

Writing Exercise Now look at your listed goals and brainstorm what values had/have an impact on these goals. Choose one goal and write down the value that has affected it and where the value comes from

Types of Goals Short-term goals can be reached in short periods of time (days, hours, or weeks) Long term goals can be reached in long periods of time (Many months, a year or many years) Short term goals are a part of long term planning

Example If your long term goal is to be become a fashion designer you may have a series of short term goals that help you reach it –Take PHS at Ulrich –Learn basic sewing skills

Example These can lead you to longer term goals such as: –Researching and being admitted to a college with a fashion design school –Obtain your first runway show –Sell your clothing in a major department store

Success Putting a specific timeline on a goal may help you accomplish it. –Ex. I want to learn how to sew –Vs. I want to learn to sew by Christmas –It may also help to create a list of resources you will need in order to complete this goal

Priorities A priority is what is considered most important based on values Setting priorities can help you reach your goals When you have too many goals, set them in order of importance, and make one goal the priority

Exercise Take the list of goals from earlier, and rewrite them in order of priority, 1 being more important, and 5 being least important For example, you may be more determined to reach your financial goals than your relational goals, or vice versa.

Exercise Choose the goal that gets top priority and set 3 short term goals that you can accomplish within hours, days, or weeks.
