Summary of the Lancashire Young People’s Alcohol & Tobacco Survey 2013 completed by 3467 young people up to age 17 but mainly aged years old

Alcohol – the positives! 39% of young people claim they NEVER drink alcohol (increase of 19% since 2011, 7% NW) 43% of young people DO NOT think it is normal to get drunk (14% NW) 17% of young people are regularly drinking, once a week or more (decrease of 15% since 2011, same as NW) 11% of young people regularly binge drink (9% decrease since 2011, same as NW)

Alcohol attitudes & risk 38% agree that they don’t always feel in control when they drink alcohol 28% agree that they worry that their drink may get spiked 73% agree that they make sure they are not on their own when they are out drinking alcohol 12% have been in a car with a young person who had been drinking alcohol 25% of those who had drunk and had sex regretted it 23% of those who had drunk alcohol have been violent or in a fight whilst drunk

Smoking behaviour Three-fifths of all respondents (60%) say that neither of their parents/guardians smoke. 59% have never tried smoking 16% currently smoke 6% used to smoke but have given up 19% have tried smoking but did not like it. If tried smoking 38% were 12 or under when they first started.

Other issues 27% of all respondents have bought or tried electronic cigarettes 30% of all respondents are aware of either ‘drinking dens’ or ‘party houses’ in their area 63% drink high energy drinks (Red Bull 77%), 37% drink them one day a week (61% in the Ribble Valley) 15% of young people know someone who has taken Mephedrone (bubble or meow meow) Of those who drink 5% have fake ID and 55% of those bought it from the internet
