 We will use three different ways to classify different governments 1.Who Can Participate 2.Geographic distribution of governmental power within the state 3.The relationship between the legislative and executive branches  Side note: What is legislative and what is executive????? How do we classify governments?

 Probably the most important classification  There are two forms  Can you guess?  Democracy  Dictatorship 1. Who Can Participate?

 Supreme political authority rests with the people  Consent of the people  People are sovereign  Two different forms of democracy  Direct  The people directly make decisions  Today no National Direct Democracy  Indirect  The people vote for other people to make decisions  Representative democracy Democracy

 Those who rule cannot be held responsible to the will of the people  Authoritarian  Can you name some??????  Other names  Autocracy: single person holds all the power  Oligarchy: a small, elite group holds all the power Dictatorship

 Unitary Government:  All power of the government is controlled by one agency  Centralized government  Federal Government:  Power of the government is divided between a central government and several local government  Division of powers  Confederation:  An alliance of independent states.  No real powerful central decision maker 2. Geographic Distribution of Power

 This relationship is usually seen in two ways  Presidential government:  The executive and legislative branches are separate and equal  Each have their own powers and checks on the others power  Parliamentary Government:  Executive includes prime minister and cabinet.  All of which are members of the legislative branch  The Prime Minister is chosen from the Majority Party from its members 3. Relationship between Legislative and Executive Branches
